Effects of concentrations (1, 000, 4, 000, and 7, 000 ppm) and number of spraying (1-3 applications) of N, N-dimethylaminosuccinamic acid (SADH) and malefic hydrazide (MH) at different orchard sites on vegetative growth of longan cv. Chom-Pu trees were studied in the northen part of Thailand. It was found that the diameter of old stem internode, the length of old compound leaf, the diameter of new stem internode, the length of new shoot and the length of new compound leaf were not affected by orchard site, while the leaf flushing, the length of old shoot and the length of old and new leaflet were affected. The diameter of old stem internode and the length of old shoot, old leaflet, new shoot, new compound leaf and new leaflet were not affected by both SADH or MH. In the second orchard site where was in higher level with high aridity, the leaf flushing was delayed by MH, while twice spraying of MH caused the diameter of new stem internode to be smaller than once spraying. Whereas, in the first orchard site where was in moist area, there was interaction between concetration and number of spraying of MH, since the length of old compound leaf was increased by SADH and MH compared with that untreated.

Grain shedding habit at harvest time of 397 Bangladesh deepwater rice varieties was measured with an unbounded gauge type transducer (UT: 1 kg) . More than a half of the varieties showed very easily shedding habit, and those showing hardly shedding habit were very few. Morphological observation revealed that all the Bangladesh deepwater rice varieties possess the abscission layer between pedicel and spikelet. The parenchymatous cells in the abscission layer seemed to crack by maturity time in most of the varieties belonging to the highly and moderate shedding types, while they did not crack in the varieties of hardly shedding type. No association was observed between the grain shedding habit and elongation ability.

One-pass vertical friction-type rice whitener was evaluated by introducing a whitening index defined as the ratio of the vertical resistance exerted by the whitener and the rice flow rate. As a result, there existed a curvilinear relationship between the flow rate and the vertical resistance.
The configuration of the whitening screen did not affect much the characteristics of this whitener although the hexagonal screen exhibited a relatively higher performance compared with the rest.
Also, the angle of slit has no significant effect over the characteristics of this whitener.

The project which is aimed at developing adequate cropping systems for vegetables and legumes in the tropics was begun in 1983 and continues up to date. The results obtained were summarized as follows:
Mungbean yield in the spring and autumn plantings became nearly nil in the second cultivation on the same plot because of serious root damage caused by Fusarium oxysporum even if rotated with rice while mungbean yielded fairly high in the summer planting. Introduction of mungbean into cropping systems, therefore, is not recommended, except for summer planting especially in the subtropics. Soybean, on the other hand, is far more tolerant to continuous cropping than mungbean and can be cultivated on the same place without any serious growth retardation for a couple of successive years. Chinese cabbage and tomato should be uprooted when harvested. Their residues retard the growth of successive crops because of its allelopathic effect and introduction of various pathogens into the soils.
Rice straw mulch proved to increase summer tomato yields significantly, but compost application and increased fertilizer exerted no effect on its yield increase. A new heat-tolerant CL 5915-153 tripled the yield of previous heat-tolerant CL 1131-38-4 in the summer planting. It is, therefore, primarily important to avoid hazardous high temperature and heavy rain in the summer planting in terms of introducing highly heat-tolerant cultivars and adequate cultural practices. Cultivars with short duration are also indispensable as a summer component to a successful cropping sequence.
Deep-rooted crops with long duration are not suitable for a successive crops of the spring rice (in rainy season) . Combination of the spring rice and shallow-rooted summer crops with the short duration is acceptable. The deep-rooted crops following summer rice is highly recommendable (in dry season) . Combination of Graminaceous and Leguminaceous crops with long duration, and summer vegetables with short duration is also highly recommendable.
Based on the data collected, recommended cropping systems for vegetables and legumes in the tropics are presented. Acceptability of AVRDC advanced lines of tomato, Chinese cabbage, sweet potato, soybean and mungbean in the cropping system is also discussed.
