Investigation of the fate of the ultimobranchial body in embryos and newborn infants of guinea pigs elucidated the following:
In the 13 mm,14 mm and 15 mm CRL stages, the ultimobranchial bodies appear as an independent thick-walled cystic structure or as a cystic part of the parathyro(IV)-ultimobranchial complex dorsal to the thyroid lobe, and in the 19 mm and 20 mm CRL stages they are incorporated to the thyroid lobe. After the onset of occurrence of definitive follicles in the thyroid gland (33 mm to 35 mm), the ultimobranchial bodies still remain as a thin-walled cyst, sometimes with a few vesicles.
The ultimobranchial bodies can persist until a far later stage as a cystic part of the parathyro(IV)-ultimobranchial complex or rarely as a cystic part of the parathyro(IV)-thymo(IV)-ultimobranchial complex, and without being incorporated to the thyroid lobe.
The content of the cysts and vesicles is a feebly eosinophil i c granular material, sometimes with desquamated cells. It is feebly periodic acid-Schiff positive but is not glycogen. Autoradiography indicates no accumulation of radioiodine I181 here.
The epithelium of the ultimobranchial bodi e s is stratified around the cavity, and soon becomes a reticulated tissue of clearly swollen cells. Later, the epithelium becomes single cubical to columnar. Glycogen is abundant here in the 13 mm to 63 mm CRL stages, but later it disappears completely.
The ultimobranchial bodies produce cell cords from the cyst wall. The cell cords extend between thyroid cell cords and later between thyroid follicles. Periodic acid-Schiff's and Best's stains for glycogen fail to demonstrate whether these cell groups of ultimobranchial origin can survive as parafollicular or interfollicular cells or not.
One of the present authors, Yuko Machida, wishes to acknowledge her sincere thanks to assistant Professor Dr. H. Muto, Nagoya City University Department of Anatomy, for his kind help and encouragement.

    1. The retrograde degeneration in the anterior thalamic nuclei of the dog following localized ablations of the limbic cortex indicates that the nucleus anteromedialis projects mainly to the anterior cingular region, the nucleus anteroventralis to the posterior cingular region, and the nucleus anterodorsalis to the retrosplenial region.
    2. By ablation of the medial cortex above the sulcus splenialis of the dog, the nucleus anteroventralis and nucleus anterodorsalis, especially the former, show retrograde degeneration.
    3. When the lateral cortex of the cer e bral hemisphere is almost completely ablated unilaterally in adult and young dogs, considerably severe changes are found in the nucleus anteroventralis, nucleus anterodorsalis and nucleus anteromedialis pars dorsolaterals. This fact may indicate that these nuclei project also to the lateral cortex.
    4. On studying the Mar c hi preparations of the cat in w hich the electrolytic lesion has been made in the dorsolateral part of the nucleus anteroventralis, the degenerated fibers can be traced mainly to the posterior cingular region, a part of the anterior cingular region and the anterior part of the retrosplenial region. In addition to these regions, a small number of degenerated fibers can be followed also to the gyrus splenialis, gyrus suprasplenialis, gyrus lateralis and gyrus suprasylvius medius.
    5. The cortical projection fields of t h e anterior nuclei overlap more extensively than generally assumed. These projection fields overlap not only with each other, but also with the other projection systems.
    6. From the above-mentioned findings it may be concluded that the anterior thalamic nuclei send fibers mainly to the limbic cortex, but a few fibers run dorsalward to the medial cortex above the sulcus splenialis, and the lateral cortex, especially the gyrus lateralis and the gyrus suprasylvius medius.
This investigation was supported in part by grant for scientific research from the Department of Education of the Japanese Government.

From 10 days of age on, mice were injected 20 times every other day with 0.02 mg of methylthiouracil per gram of body weight, and at 1,5,10,15 and 20 days after withdrawal of administration of methylthiouracil their anterior pituitaries were histologically investigated.
    1. Acidophiles showed a slight increase in size a day after withdrawal of administration, but at 5 days after rather decreased in size, while an increase in number and cytoplasmic granulation was seen. Thereafter these changes gradually disappeared, and at 20 days acidophiles showed an almost normal appearance in cytological detail.
    2. Beta cells showed an increase in size and a decrease in cytoplasmic granulation at a day after withdrawal of administration, and at 10 days after withdrawal of administration an increase in size of beta cells was seen. However, granulation of beta cells remained decrease at 20 days after withdrawal of administration.
    3. Delta cells did not show any appreciable cha n ge.
    4. Theta cells were occasionally found regardless of administration.
    5. Chromophobes showed a decrease in number at 5,10 and 15days after withdrawal of administration in relation to increase in number of acidophiles. From the sefindings, it is considered that morphological changes of beta cells continue for a relatively long period after withdrawal of methylthiouracil administration.
