The Sertoli cell of the lesser mouse deer, Tragulus javanicus, was examined using light and transmission electron microscopy. Similar to other ruminants, a multivesicular nuclear body (MNB) and laminated smooth endoplasmic reticulum (sER) were observed in the lesser mouse deer Sertoli cell. The MNB was present within the Sertoli cell nucleus, and consisted of vesicles, irregular tubules and ribosome-like structures. It was infrequent in the lesser mouse deer, which differs from domestic ruminants. Vesicles and irregular tubules seem to contain some materials with low and/or middle electron density, and be surrounded by electron dense materials. The diameter of vesicles was between 30 nm and 180 nm. Since the MNB, though less developed compared to that of bulls and goats, was present even in the Sertoli cell nucleus of the primitive ruminant-lesser mouse deer, it should be a common structure of ruminant Sertoli cells.

Morphological changes in the mouse sublingual gland parenchyma subjected to parasympathetic nerve block were investigated. Mice were subjected to unilateral resection of the chorda tympani, near its point of joining with the 1ingual nerve. After 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 or 20 weeks, the mice were killed and their sublingual glands were removed and processed for light and electron microscopy. Two weeks after resection, the space between the adjoining lobules of the glands on the treated side began to be expanded, and by 10 weeks were 10 times the size of the spaces in the glands of the untreated mice. Three weeks after resection, the lobule area decreased to about 72% of the area of glands in the untreated mice and the acinus area to about 52%. However, no significant difference was seen between the numbers of acini in each group. Electron microscopy showed that the glands on the treated side contained fewer secretory granules than the glands in the untreated mice, though there was no difference in size. Neither the lobules of the glands on the treated side nor those of the glands of the untreated mice contained many TUNEL-positive cells. These findings suggest that following parasympathetic nerve resection, mouse sublingual gland acinar cells undergo atrophy with a reduction size rather than cell death.

Morphological study of the lower limb muscles is necessary for the analysis ofmuscle function and its relation to the aging process. In this study, we measured the muscle weight and the muscle fiber morphometry (cross-sectional area and total number of muscle fibers at the muscular belly, and muscle fiber size) of the human lower limb in an adult Japanese cadaver (male, 58 years old). The results presented here can provide the normal control data to elucidate the aging process of the human lower limb muscles. The morphological features in the human lower limb muscles were the pronounced enlargement of the gluteus maximus in the hip, the vasti muscles in the thigh and the soleus in the leg.

In the neonatal and postnatal development of rat TMJ, tenascin-C and -X were detected in the muscle, bone matrix, connective tissue around the bone, and blood vessel of rats at E18 (18-days old embryo), 0-, and 5-days postnatal. The reaction of tenascin-X was also found in the connective tissue around the mandibular condyle. The mRNA of tenascin-C (600 bp) and -X (588 bp) was also detected in the developmental muscle with the level of tenascin-C mRNA moderately decreased during development. Therefore, tenascin-C and -X may have different effects on the connective tissue duimg development of TMJ.

The aim of this study was to assess the volume of the medial epicondyle and lateral epicondyle in comparison with the distal end of humerus volume in male and female elite athletes participating in an impact loading sport (volleyball). The volleyball group consisted of 17 female, aged 20.47 ± 2.47 years (mean ± SD), 16 male aged 21.68 ± 3.47 years (mean ± SD); training for about 8 hours/week. The control group consisted of 15 nonactive females aged 21.73 ± 2.68 years (mean ± SD) and 14 nonactive males aged 23.35 ± 4.16 years (mean ± SD). Anthropometric determinations (height, weight, limb length, girth of arm and forearm) were made on each subjects. Range of motion was evaluated by standard goniometric technique. Comparative plain films of both elbows were obtained in an anteroposterior projection. The volumes of the medial epicondyle and lateral epicondyle were determined by the principle of Cavalieri which is an effective stereologic volume calculation method. in the volleybal1 players, increased medial epicondyle volume was recorded in the dominant and nondominant arms as compared with the control subjects (P < 0.05). Wrist flexors are highly involved in spiking, blocking and serving in volleyball. In this study we founded volume of medial epicondyle which is the connection point of flexor muscle was inereased because of loading.
