Perinatal emergencies occur suddenly and often result in fatal outcomes in both the mother and fetus. Therefore, it is necessary to commence the appropriate and intensive care without delay. However, the majority of institutions are not provided with satisfactory personnel and equipment. To decrease perinatal and maternal mortality, the obstetrical DIC rescue program of Shiga University of Medical Science was established in September, 1994. The program was composed of departments of obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, anesthesiology, pediatrics, emergency and critical care medicine, and intensive care unit of Shiga University of Medical Science. To promote prompt maternal transport, the program declares to all obstetricians in the Shiga prefecture that any obstetrical emergency patient should be accepted at any time with only a phone call. In the 3 years after the initiation of the program, we treated 40 cases of obstetrical DIC or related cases. This is our second report of the program.
