The purpose of the study was to investigate a preventive effect of tranilast on hypertrophic scar formation after gynecological surgery. Patients who has gynecological surgery from June 1998 to May 1999 were assigned to two groups: a tranilast-treated group and a group not treated with tranilast (a non-treatment group). Tranilast was initiated on the seventh day after surgery, and the period of treatment was 4 months. Subjective symptoms and objective signs of 38 tranilast-treated patients and 20 non-treatment patients were analyzed. Objective signs in a tranilast-treated group were significantly superior to those in the non-treatment group. The results of the present study showed that tranilast is useful in preventing hypertrophic scar formation after gynecological surgery.
