    This review describes individual studies of removable dental prostheses, evaluated their performance and clinical applicability for the proposal to expand health insurance coverage of titanium and its alloys to removable dental prostheses. Titanium and its alloys have become clinically applicable as prosthetic materials by improving dental casting systems. They have high biosafety and good mechanical properties, are excellent substitutes for the silver-palladium-gold alloys for casting, and are highly useful for removable dental prostheses. Therefore, the introduction of health insurance coverage for removable dental prostheses made of titanium and its alloys is worthy of consideration.

    The leading cause of guided bone regeneration (GBR) failure is infection. Herein, we developed a new GBR membrane with good mechanical and osteogenic properties by crosslinking the small intestinal submucosa (SIS) with epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). Meanwhile, EGCG is also a natural antibacterial agent. This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial efficacy of EGCG-crosslinked SIS (E-SIS) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli through EGCG release, bacterial count, live/dead staining, scanning electron microscopy, growth curve, and biofilm formation tests. The results showed that E-SIS effectively inhibited bacteria’s growth and adhesion, and its antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus was stronger than that against Escherichia coli. 0.5% E-SIS had the most potent antibacterial activity. The antibacterial mechanism of E-SIS might be related to the release of EGCG and the surface properties of E-SIS. In conclusion, 0.5% E-SIS is a promising GBR membrane with good osteogenic and antibacterial properties.

    Titanium is a biocompatible material commonly used for dental treatments. However, the detailed mechanism underlying the weak biological activity of titanium has not been elucidated. We investigated both the inflammatory responses and T cell activation induced by solid titanium in the gingiva in mice. Both titanium and nickel wire implantation promoted neutrophil infiltration into the gingiva on day 2. Nickel, but not titanium, wire implantation enhanced proinflammatory cytokine expression and dendritic cell activity in gingival tissue by day 2. Nickel wire implantation enhanced the activity of T cells in draining lymph nodes on day 5. Moreover, T cell and neutrophil infiltration and elevated proinflammatory cytokine expression in the gingival tissue were still observed on day 5. However, no such augmented biological responses were observed after titanium wire implantation. These findings suggest that, unlike nickel, solid titanium does not induce sufficient inflammatory responses leading to T cell activation in gingival tissue.

    The surface of zirconia was treated with hot-acid etching of different durations to improve its shear bond strength to resin. Zirconia discs were subjected to untreated, sand-blasting, and hot-etching treatments for 10, 30 and 60 min. The discs were bonded to the surface of bovine enamel specimens using RelyX Ultimate resin cement. The bonded specimens were divided into immediate and thermocyling aging groups according to whether they underwent thermal cycling. A universal mechanical testing machine was used to measure the shear bond strength of the specimens. One-way analysis of variance was used to determine the effect of hot-etching time on the shear bond strength. In the immediate and thermocyling aging groups, 60 min of hot-etching provided significantly higher shear bond strength than the other conditions (p<0.05).

    The use of fixed retainers in the lower arch is frequent; however, its presence increases the accumulation of biofilm and dental calculus. The objective of this research was to evaluate, in vitro, the accumulation of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) in 3 designs of fixed retainers. Nine models were reproduced in heat-cured acrylic resin and divided into groups: straight retainer (SR), retainer with vertical strap (RVS), retainer with horizontal strap (RHS). The accumulation of S. mutans was assessed using the MTT assay (3-4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) and then measured using an automated reader. The RHS group showed less biofilm accumulation compared to the other groups (p<0.05). The distance between the tooth surface and the retainer showed a strong negative correlation with biofilm accumulation (rs=−0.79, p=0.00037). The RHS showed significantly less accumulation of S. mutans due to the distance between the retainer and the tooth surface. This research provides relevant data for a future randomized clinical trial.

    This study evaluated the variation of surface and intra-pulpal temperature, during bleaching protocol, using LED/laser. The 35% (HP35), 15% (HP15) and 6% (HP6) gels were used associated with LED/laser applied every 1 min for 30 min in a human canine. The evaluation of surface temperature variation (∆Ts) was performed using a pHmeter and the intra-pulpal temperature variation (∆Ti) was performed using a digital thermometer, at times of 1-, 5-, 10- 15- and 30-min. Statistical analysis was performed using the two-way repeated measures ANOVA test and Bonferroni post-hoc test was used at a significance level of 5%. HP35 and HP15 showed greater temperature variation than HP6 up to 10 min of surface evaluation, showing no differences between them. In the intra-pulpal evaluation, no group showed differences throughout the procedure.

    The study aimed to compare shrinkage displacements of fully and partially bonded resin composite restorations (RCRs). Two groups (n=5) Class-I RCR evaluated: Group 1 (G1) fully bonded and Group 2 (G2) debonded at the floor. Experimental results were compared with predictions from simple theory and finite element analysis (FEA). The experimental linear surface displacement (LSD) was G1 62.5±5.2 µm and G2 32.8±4.0 µm. Theoretically-predicted LSD for G1 60.1±7.4 µm and G2 31.3±7.5 µm. FEA-predicted LSD were G1 65.2 µm and G2 34.6 µm. The experimental volumetric surface displacement (VSD) was G1 1.22±0.2 mm3 and G2 0.63±0.2 mm3. Theoretically-predicted VSD for G1 1.36±0.2 mm3 and G2 0.67±0.2 mm3. No significant difference (p>0.05) was found in LSD and VSD among the experimental, theoretical and FEA in the same group. Significant differences (p<0.05) were noted between the two groups, with LSD and VSD of G2 values being almost half of G1. This pattern gave an insight of a debond restoration characteristics.

    Erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser debonding is a promising removal method in prosthodontics. This study aimed to assess Er:YAG laser energy transmission through novel zirconia ceramics. Five types of ceramic samples: lithium disilicate ceramic (LDC), self-glazed zirconia (SGZ), 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP), 4Y-TZP and 5Y-TZP with 5 thicknesses (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 mm) and 2 shades (A1, A3), 50 specimens total, were made. Fourier transformation infrared absorption spectra were obtained for each ceramic type, and Er:YAG laser energy transmission tests were conducted for each specimen. The novel zirconia ceramic (SGZ, 4Y-TZP, 5Y-TZP) transmission ranged from 40%–60%. The transmitted laser energy decreased with increasing ceramic thickness, and the differences between different shades were significant (p<0.05). The novel zirconias had a higher translucency than 3Y-TZP at any given thickness and shade, and when the thickness was >1.5 mm, the novel zirconias had a higher translucency than LDC.

    This study aimed to determine the influence of surface roughness of the color adjustment potential restoration of universal resin composites. A structural colored resin composite (Omnichroma, OC) and a pigment-employed universal shade resin composite (Beautifil Unishade, BU) were used. Each resin composite was placed in a cavity to determine its ability to match the color of artificial teeth. The surface of the resin composites was polished with #800- or #2000-grit SiC paper before performing color measurements. One-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc tests were performed (α=0.05). The color difference (ΔE*ab) ranged from 2.5–3.9 for OC and 1.8–8.7 for BU. OC has a more stable color adjustment than BU. The color adjustment potential of universal resin composites was affected by the surface roughness of the restorations.

    To evaluate the effect of remaining pericervical dentin (PCD) on the biomechanical behavior of endocrown-restored molars with different materials, six three-dimensional finite element (FE) models were reconstructed with different thicknesses and heights of pulp-chamber lateral dentinal wall (PCLDW). IPS Empress 2, In-Ceram Zirconia, and Lava Ultimate were selected as the materials. Compared with the Lava Ultimate FE models, the maximum tensile stress in the FE models using ceramics was higher in the endocrown and lower in the PCD surrounding it, and the overall failure probabilities with different PCLDW thicknesses and heights were similar, ranging from 9.8% to 12.9% under the normal lateral masticatory force, which were lower than the FE models using Lava Ultimate (ranging from 13.4% to 15.1%). Considering the bonding properties of ceramics, endocrown-restored molars using etchable lithium disilicate-reinforced glass ceramic exhibit superior longevity due to the stress shielding effect, regardless of the thickness and height of PCLDW.

    This study evaluated the interfacial integrity of deep (6 mm) Class-II (OM/OD) restorations placed using different bulk-fill resin composites [Filtek™ Bulk Fill Flowable Restorative (BF) and Filtek™ Bulk Fill Posterior Restorative (BP) (3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA)] of different increment thicknesses (2 or 4 mm). BP was used for capping in all cases, while Filtek™ Z250 Universal Restorative (3M ESPE) was used as the control material. Interfacial debonding was measured during curing through acoustic emission (AE), followed by image analysis using micro-computed tomography and scanning electron microscopy. Microhardness testing was also conducted to assess degree of conversion. Depth of cure was adequate in all restorations. Specimens with 4-mm thick first increment of BF, which had a higher shrinkage strain, produced most AE events and debonding. Thus, bulk filling of deep cavities using bulk-fill resin composites with a high shrinkage strain should be avoided.

    This study investigated the effect of water at high temperature on the physical and mechanical properties of polyurethane and on biofilm removal, aiming for its applicability in dental unit waterlines. The evaluations were carried out after simulating a 1-year period of daily immersion and measured changes in color, microhardness, surface roughness, and tensile strength before and after reproducing a disinfection protocol. For antibiofilm activity measurement, fragments of waterline were contaminated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and submitted to the disinfection protocols. Relative to effects on the physical and mechanical properties, immersion in water at 60°C did not promote changes in color and tensile strength. However, lower values were observed for microhardness and increased values for surface roughness. Regarding antibiofilm action, water at 60°C significantly reduced the microbial load and promoted substantial changes in cells morphology. In conclusion, disinfection with water at 60°C demonstrated possible application in controlling cross-contamination in dentistry.

    This study was to investigate the new analysis manner of dental hard tissue change using in vivo micro-computed tomography (CT) in rat. Scanning, registration, analyzing, and presenting method to track longitudinal in vivo micro-CT data on dental hard tissues were validated in murine models: formative, dentin thickness after direct pulp capping with mineral trioxide aggregate; resorptive, development of apical bone rarefaction in apical periodontitis model. Serial in vivo micro-CT scans were analyzed through rigid-registration, active-contouring, deformable-registration, and motion vector-based quantitative analyses. The rate and direction of hard tissue formation after direct pulp capping was datafied by tracing coordinate shift of fiducial points on pulp chamber outline in formative model. The development of apical periodontitis could be monitored with voxel counts, and quantitatively analyzed in terms of lesion size, bone loss, and mineral density in resorptive model. This study supports the application of longitudinal in vivo micro-CT for resorptive- and formative-phase specific monitoring of dental hard tissues.

    This study investigated a novel method for artificial synthesis of β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP). The binder of the phosphate-bonded investment was replaced with calcium oxide instead of magnesium oxide and sintered in an electric furnace. The water/powder mixing ratio for hardening was determined using preliminary experiments. Thermal analysis was performed to check the thermal behavior of the sample tested. In addition, the fired sample was analyzed using an X-ray diffraction apparatus to identify the compounds after sintering. The hardened sample exhibited multiple compounds, including unreacted components, post which, new compounds were generated by heating. Peaks of calcium pyrophosphate and β-TCP were confirmed at 800ºC and 1,300ºC, respectively. β-TCP could be easily synthesized within the limited study by sintering at 1,300ºC both monoammonium phosphate and calcium oxide. Experimental results suggest that β-TCP can be easily synthesized by simulating the conventional dental casting process.

    Although dental evidence is frequently used for the identification of unidentified persons, information about the many types of alloys used in prosthetics is not utilized. If the type of alloy can be identified from a small amount of material, the scope of the search could be narrowed. In this experiment, a method was investigated for identifying the alloy type using 3 kinds of cutting points (a white point and 2 types of silicone points). Wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (WDS) was used for elemental analysis. The elements were translated into multidimensional vectors, and the cosine similarity was calculated to compare vectors of the WDS results and vectors of the official data of alloys. According to the results, cosine similarity showed a concordance of more than 0.8. The developed program is expected to be useful as a method for identifying alloy types using only a small amount of grinding dust.

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of repeated casting and heat treatment on the corrosion resistance of a commercial Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy as evaluated by electrochemical techniques. After repeated casting, the fifth cast of the Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy exhibited dramatic degradation of properties, although upon heat treatment, this corrosion resistance did improve. Despite the improvement by heat treatment, after five castings, this alloy may not have satisfactory hardness for clinical use. These results of this study demonstrate that, up to the fourth cast and heat treatment, the Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy has acceptable corrosion resistance and hardness.

    The purpose of the study was the investigation of the polymerization of a preheated composite resin beneath lithium disilicate. First, lithium disilicate discs in two shades (HT A2 and HT A4) and three different thicknesses (2, 4, and 6 mm) were bonded on dentine with preheated composite resin that was photo-polymerized for 20 s. The composite resin microhardness, the double bond conversion (DC) and their correlation were estimated. Second, standardized occlusal veneers of two shades and two different thicknesses (4 and 6 mm) were bonded with preheated composite resin and photopolymerized for 60 or 270 s. A microhardness line profiling was performed on the cross-section of each specimen and the correspondence DC was calculated. Shade and thickness of lithium disilicate were found to have a significant impact on micro-hardness and DC of the composite resin. Beneath standardized occlusal veneers DC can reach clinically acceptable level if photopolymerization duration is extended properly.

    We aimed to elucidate the effects of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on the shear bond strength (SBS) between heat-cured polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and a Co-Cr-Mo alloy. Disk-shaped Co-Cr-Mo alloy prepared by casting were subjected to different UV treatment times (0, 15, and 30 min). To determine the effect of UV treatment on surface properties of the alloy, surface roughness, wettability, and chemical compositions were analyzed. To evaluate the SBS, cylindrical PMMA was bonded to the UV-treated alloy, and subsequently subjected to the SBS test after 24 h of storage at room temperature or following 10,000 thermal cycles (n=10/group). After the UV treatment, the surface roughness remained unchanged, but oxidation resulted in the surface exhibiting greater hydrophilic characteristics. The UV-treated group showed significantly higher SBS values than those of the non-treated group (p<0.001). These results suggested that UV treatment-mediated oxidation improved the bond strength between PMMA and Co-Cr-Mo alloy.
