We developed a machinery to sterilize the wastes of used hemodialysers and tested its sterilizing performance using two speies of standard bacterial spores as indicators. The machinery was designed for hospital indoor use, and the principle of the sterilization was heating in combination with dry air of 180℃ and irradiation by microwave to vaporize the residual water in hemodialysers.Under the standard condition of operation, in which twenty sets of hemodialysers were heated for five hours, the temperature inside the hemodialysers was kept higher than 130℃ for one hour. The heat treatment killed the bacterial spores of B. subtilis and B. stearothermophilus completely. Moreover, bacterial spores were detected neither in the exhausted air nor in the heating chamber. These results demonstrated the sterilizing performance of this machinery.
