We used polymerase chain reaction(PCR) method to detect Verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli(VTEC) and evaluated this method in view points of simplicity, promptitude and economy. Commercial common primers were used. These results were evaluated as follows. 1.When 10μl samples contain over 1, 500CFU, this test method was available. 2.Cost of this test was \130 per one sample. Twenty five minute were necessary to deal with ten samples. 3.It look 3〜4 hours to judge the result of the test after the start of bacterial cultivation. 4.Because the liquid culture medium inhibits the PCR reaction, it was necessary to use sterilized water to dilute the samples. As the VTEC is getting various serotypes recently, the PCR method will become one of the good method to detect the VTEC rapidly.
