Stoma management has progressed with the improvement of ostomy aids, especially of ostomy appliances. The use of ostomy appliances in Japan dates back to only 30 years ago. Until then, stoma management had relied on the application of devices for other use. Ishida ostomy appliance developed in 1955 was the first product commercially launched in Japan. However, it was a non-adhesive appliance fixed with a belt and its users suffered from fecal leakage and skin irritation. A non-adhesive ostomy appliance, a plastic bag with adhesive, was developed around 1965. It was excellent in tightness and adhesion, but the skin site for its fixation was always under occlusive environment and skin irritation occurred frequently. Therefore, such appliance as is fixed to the skin with adhesive but does not place the skin under occlusive environment was expected. The development of composite polymer product called skin barrier has markedly decreased the occurrence of skin irritation. At present, the combination of skin bassier and adhesive appliance has been established as a standard method for stoma management. The authors describe in this paper the history of ostomy aids in Japan and the problems to be solved.
