JOURNAL FREE ACCESSPolycrystalline Al-Cu alloys were epitaxially grown from sets of seed crystals having various combinations of crystallographic orientations. The orientations of seed crystals particularly in <111> direction are inherited more hardly in the alloys containing more of Cu. When a set of seed crystals having {100} growth plane and alternately combining <100> and <110> directions perpendicular to the growth direction is used, every grain even in solute-rich alloys such as AC1A and AC2A unidirectionally solidifing completely inherits the orientation of seed crystal and stably grows. These facts lead to successful preparation of polycrystalline Al-Cu alloys having the dendrite arrangement three dimensionally controlled.View full abstractDownload PDF (1147K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThere are many reports on the crystal orientation relationship between each phases of eutectics, but it is not clear how these relationship can be appled to those eutectics which grow on the matrix dendrites in hypo or hyper eutectic regions. In unidirectionally solidified Al-CuAl2 hypo-eutectic alloys, crystal orientation relationships are obsverved macroscopically by X-ray Pole Figure Diffraction method. Between Al & θ phases, there exsists Kraft's equilibrium crystal orientation relationship, but there interfaces are severely deviated from those equilibrium ones by local growth fluctuations. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSA deformation mechanism diagram for aluminum is given three-dimensionally with axes of strain-rate (10-10-100s-1), temperature (0.5-1.0Tm), and grain-size (102-108b). This type of diagram is useful to realize the general features of deformation behavior during constant-rate straining such as conventional tensile tests and hot working. Three types of two-dimensional cross-sections of the three-dimensional diagram are also shown with the contour lines of equi-stress. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSWhen hydrogen in molten aluminum exceeds the critical concentration, gas pores are formed prior to solification. The gas pores do not float away from the melt unexpectedly and are trapped by the advancing interface. They incorporate with pores in the liquid ahead of the interface and grow into cylindrical ones with the aid of diffusion of hydrogen from the surrounding liquid. They are mainly found at cell boundaries and rarely within cells. Hydrogen in frozen aluminum is condensed at the bottom and diluted at the top. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSEffects of aging treatment and modification on the fracture toughness of Al-7%Si-0.5%Mg alloy castings were studied by the double torsiom bend test. The fracture toughness is appreciably affected by the aging treatment. The casing aged for 4hr at 137°C has the highest fracture toughness. Na modification results in fracture toughness improved by 15 to 42% for various aging treatments. When different aging treatments are made, the fracture toughness varies according to the variation of parameter n√σy derived from the tensile test.View full abstractDownload PDF (717K) -
