JOURNAL FREE ACCESSIn order to assess the possibility of a forging process of aluminum matrix composites, the upsettability and flow stress of a SiC/6061 aluminum alloy composite and the tensile strength of the upset composite were investigated. The composite was prepared with a powder extruding method. The upsetting test and the compressive test were carried out to measure a critical reduction in height and a flow stress. After some upsetting processes and those followed by a heat treatment, the strength and ductility are measured using a small tensile specimen machined from the upset material. At temperature higher than 300°C, the upsettability of the composite is as high as that of conventional alloy. Both at room and elevated temperatures, upset composite is weaker but more ductile than unupset one. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSLateral extrusion is a method for making "disc" shaped products. The extrusion press includes a billet chamber, a ram adapted to drive a billet through the billet chamber and a mandrel for making an axial flow of metal change to radial direction. This reseach is about an unique extrusion process, which is based on lateral extrusion. In lateral extrusion, a billet is extruded radially by a mandrel. As the extrusion progresses, the diameter of produced disc increases. But, when the extrusion has more progressed, the produced disc breaks at the circumference of it because of tensile force. The maximum diameter of A1050 at cold work, expressed by the sectional area ratio of billet (A0) to disc (A1), is about 5 (=A1/A0). To improve the sectional area ratio, attention is paid to the design of mandrel. Several kinds of mandrels are used in this experiment. The mandrel with radial grooves, the mandrel with concentric step, the mandrel with concentric grooves with no lubrication make the ratio improve. Further, the experiment with the mandrel with radial grooves and concentric step is performed. The mandrel with radial grooves and concentric step can make the ratio larger than the mandrel with each element individually. About the mandrel with radial grooves, the relation between number of grooves and the ratio, and depth of grooves and the ratio are researched.View full abstractDownload PDF (693K) -

This research is about new unique extrusion process, which is based on lateral extrusion. The equilateral triangular shaped products is deformed from cylindrical billet by using this new lateral extrusion method. In lateral extrusion, a billet is extruded radially by a mandrel. As the extrusion progresses, the diameter of produced disc increases. But, when the extrusion has progressed further, the produced disc breaks at its circumference because of a tensile force. In the new method, the disc is forced to break before maximum diameter by the grooves on the mandrel. To break the disc, the grooves patterned on the mandrel, which look like veins of leaf, are used. The grooves are designed to make the metal flow easily toward corners and to force the flow to sidewards. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe hot forging technique of aluminum alloy was studied by means of an originally developed thermo-rigid-plastic coupled simulator. The equation for deformation resistance of 6061 aluminum alloy was formulated by using the simulator and compared with upsetting experimental results. In the hot forging of an aluminum alloy automotive suspension part by a high-speed mechanical press, it is shown that the temperature distribution in the workpiece varies according to the forging velocity, and that it should be accurately taken into account to determine the optimum forging conditions.View full abstractDownload PDF (750K) -
