JOURNAL FREE ACCESS1% of phosphate mainly containing (NaPO3)6 (P-flux) and P-flux with S 0.05 to 1%, K2S 1%, P2S5 1%, ZnS 1% or V 0.4% were introduced into molten Al-20%Si and JIS-AC9B alloys. Supplementally introducing sulfur 0.1 to 0.2% successively after P-fluxing is preferable to single addition of P-flux and combined additions of P-flux and P2S5, ZnS or V. EPMA shows that supplementally added sulfur segregates in nucleating AlP particles in primary Si crystals. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSEquilibrium potentials and polarization curves for aluminum electrodes were measured in molten AlCl3 (48-63mol% at 500°C and 31-52mol% at 680°C) -NaCl mixtures. The electrode reaction is expressed as Al+4Cl- = AlCl4-+3e regardless of AlCl3 concentration in the melt and temperature. Polarization curves at about 500°C are nearly the same as those at lower temperatures. Although aluminum deposition from AlCl4- and aluminum dissolution with the consumption of Cl- are observed not so clearly at lower temperatures or at higher AlCl3 concentration in the melt, they are obviously recognized at 680°C from a relationship between the wave height on cathodic or anodic polarization curves and the composition of the melt.View full abstractDownload PDF (553K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSEffects of iron on the corrosion potential and behavior of Al-Fe alloys corroded in deaerated 0.1 M AlCl3 solution were studied by electrochemical measurements. Iron in Al-Fe alloys in the form of intermetallic compound dissolves into AlCl3 solution and deposits on the surface of aluminum in the solution. The cathodic reaction of hydrogen evolution easily occurs on the surface of the deposited iron. The aluminum matrix therfore remains a pitting corrosion state, where the corrosion potential is equivalent to the pitting corrosion potential -0.78 V vs. Ag/AgCl.View full abstractDownload PDF (1591K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSMachinability tests were performed on AS21 and AS41 magnesium alloy castings by measuring cutting resistance, cutting ratio, surface roughness and chip formation. AS21 and AS41 are nearly identical in cutting resistance. Tangential and transversing forces of the alloys are independent of cutting speed. The cutting ratio is 0.68 to 0.85 for AS21 and 0.61 to 0.82 for AS41. The machined surface finishing is superior to that calculated theoretically on the basis of feed marks. Spiral and devided types of chips easily treatable. There is no trouble in flaming when cutting. These alloys have excellent machinability in high speed heavy cutting.View full abstractDownload PDF (1771K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSShort circuit current densities of several types of Al|AlCl3 (C1)-NaCl|AlCl3 (C2)-NaCl|Al concentration cell were measured at temperatures 200° to 680°C for estimating the rening rate in order to refine aluminum by utilizing the concentration cell reaction. Electromotive forces observed are the same as those expected. Short circuit current densities are less than half of those estimated from polarization curves for deposition and dissolution of aluminum, since there are some resistances at electrolytic diaphragm in series in the cell. Pretreatment of β-alumina porcelain of electrolytic diaphragm which includes both baking in vacuum and electrolysis with sodium electrode is effective to reduce the resistance at β-alumina/molten AlCl3-NaCl interface. The temperature difference applied to the concentration cell has a preferable effect on increase in short circuit current density.View full abstractDownload PDF (455K) -
