In order to provide appropriate nutrition guidance for the target subjects, in addition to example cases and the standard methods taught in nutrition science manuals, it is necessary to provide evidence based nutrition data obtained in actual practice. However, how that evidence is acquired and applied effectively will vary greatly according to the individuals involved, and we must consider that we still do not have the measures required to deal with the resulting evidence gaps. Starting in 2017, here at Niigata University of Health and Welfare, we have introduced a database system, the PEN System (Practice-based Evidence in Nutrition), which features easy access to practical guidance based on actual evidence. This system in now employed in the educational curriculum in the undergraduate and graduate departments at our university. In this study, we conducted a questionnaire survey aimed at post-graduate students graduated from our university and now work employed as registered dietitians in hospitals. These registered dietitians were given access to the PEN System on a trial basis, and we studied the effectiveness of the system related to their use and the demand for the evidence provided by the system. The results obtained showed that while the system was effective as a learning shell for the acquisition of evidence, many registered dietitians deeply involved mainly in special research fields offered the opinion that the amount of evidence available in Japan and the information related to clinical diagnostic guides etc. was insufficient. Accordingly, the results of this study suggested that, in the future, if we can acquire and incorporate evidence-based data related to nutrition and diets in the system on a nationwide basis, the PEN System would be useful for registered dietitians and regular dietitians in all of the regions of the country in their efforts to obtain evidence easily and effectively apply that information.
