We surveyed the breakfast eating habits of students in universities, junior colleges, and vocational schools and evaluated the frequency and contents of breakfast in terms of schools, genders, residential statuses, and bedtime/wake-up times. 1,802 students, who belonged to six universities, two junior colleges, and two vocational schools in Shiga, were investigated with self-administered questionnaires on weekdays from October to November in 2019, and we analyzed 1,509 responses (83.7% of valid responses). The frequency of having breakfast revealed a significant difference in schools, but this might be caused by the ratio of males and persons living alone. Thus, we extracted the female subjects who lived with their family for re-evaluation and found a significant difference. The ratio of those who had breakfast 3-4 times a week or less was: 22.3% for junior college students, 22.0% for university students who registered for courses other than the dietitian course, 14.2% for vocational school students, and 7.7% for university students who registered for the dietitian course, respectively. This indicates that the tendency of skipping breakfast was different in terms of schools and their majors. Moreover, those who had low frequency of having breakfast tended to eat insufficient content for their breakfast. These findings suggest that we should practice a nutritional education approach to improve the frequency and types of breakfast foods that should be eaten.
