The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) issued the "Dietary Education in Future Schools with Diet and Nutrition Teachers as the Core " in March 2017, promoting dietary education nationwide. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of dietary education support provided by nutrition teachers to homeroom teachers. The three years’ survey was conducted from 2014 with approximately 600 elementary school children and 18 general class teachers (hereafter referred to as "homeroom teachers ") on items related to the record books on dietary education created by nutrition teachers at work. The number of homeroom teachers who were willing to engage in dietary education increased significantly from 3 (16.7%) in 2015 to 11 (61.1%) in 2016 (p <0.01). Among the 12 homeroom teachers who stayed in the same school for the three years, the number of them who applied dietary teaching in their classes increased significantly from 2 (16.7%) in 2014 to 12 (100%) in 2016 (p <0.001). The number of the same homeroom teachers with less than 2% leftover food in the classroom increased significantly from 1 (8.3%) in FY2014 to 11 (91.7%) in FY2016 (p <0.001). It was found that nutrition teachers provided dietary education support to homeroom teachers, which increased the number of homeroom teachers who were willing to provide dietary education and also who practiced dietary teaching at school, as well as the decreasing rates of the school lunch leftover.
