Single-phase (binder-less) nano-polycrystalline diamond synthesized by direct conversion of graphite under high pressure and high temperature has a very fine texture consisting of small diamond grains (several tens of nanometers in size), having extremely high hardness, no cleavage and high thermal stability. In order to clarify its potentiality for industrial uses in high-precision cutting tools, the mechanical properties of nano-polycrystalline diamond were systematically investigated. The basic performance tests for cutting tools were also evaluated. These results revealed that the nano-polycrystalline diamond has an extremely high potential for high-precision cutting tools.

In this paper, surface roughness of machined surface are investigated by high speed milling under three conditions( Dry, Wet, MQL ) for selected 31 kinds of materials using a ball end mill with fine nicks at the top edge.The performance of the end mill with fine nicks is verified as follows.(1) The long tool life is obtained for hardened steel (60HRC, SKD11)(2) The surface roughness decreased by 0.19Raμm by using normal tool.

Characteristics of tool wear in glass milling are discussed. In cutting tests, soda lime glass plates are cut with carbide ball endmills to determine the lost of tool. And, a measurement method of edge profile from surface profile with numerical analysis is evaluated. As the result, the lost of tool is changing with tool attitude, and the calculated edge profiles are agreed with the measured profile from SEM images.

The UBM(UnBalanced Magnetron) sputtering method is applied to the coated end mills and some kinds of such tools are used in high-speed milling of SUS304. This coating film is designed to improve lubricating ability rather than heat resistance. Long tool life and good surface quality are obtained with these UBM-type coated tools than standard commercially available coated tools in high-speed side milling without coolant.

In this paper, in order to investigate the effect of tool rotation during the spinning machining process, experimental measurement of cutting force component was carried out. In this report, effects of cutting speed and feed rate as spinning machining on decrease of cutting force were examined experimentally. And then, it was found that tool rotational speed of cutting force decreasing existed.

A smart method for restoring 256 or more gray levels from some reduced gray levels of the given image is proposed. In the method, the restored value is estimated by averaging the neighboring sub-pixels which are generated by Sinc function beforehand. Moreover, the normalized correlation coefficient between the respective density histograms of input and output images is also proposed as the evaluation index that can qualify the outbreak of the degradation such as false contour. The image quality provided by the proposed method was experimentally excellent so that the false contour never occurred.

We investigated a method to measure displacement distribution in the full view field of a CCD camera using digital image correlation (DIC) technique. This method intends to measure displacement distribution on a surface by comparing two images before and after deformation taken with a CCD camera. In this method, template matching of the corresponding points on the two images with accuracy less than one pixel is necessary to measure small displacement. In general, image sensor such as CCD and CMOS has scatter of sensitivity in each pixel. This scatter in sensitivity causes difference of gray level in each pixel and has a large influence on the template matching for the DIC method. In this study, we investigated difference of sensitivity in each pixel of a image sensor and we considered a method to measure sensitivity difference for each pixel and also considered a method to calibrate gray level for sensitivity scattering.

A novel stereo robot vision system using a double-ply liquid crystal display ( LCD ) is proposed. The images of an object captured by right and left CCD cameras are displayed on the double-ply LCD. The light intensity transmitted through the double-ply LCD depends on the degree of matching between the images of two cameras. Therefore, the distance from the cameras to the object can be deduced from the transmitted light intensity without using sophisticated computer algorithm.
