An experimental study on the hydrodynamics of an internal circulation fluidiz ed bed was carried out on a cold three-dimensional model of a concave-shaped bed which was made from plexiglas. The experiments emphasized the elutriation of fine particles and the bed material gross circulation rate. The experimental operation for studying elutriation was batch. Seven kinds of reflectors placed above the dense bed were studied experimentally to examine their effects on the suppression of fines elutriation, and a correlation was developed, which was found to correlate with the data obtained without the reflector. The suppression efficiency of the reflector versus operating parameters and reflector structure was calculated. An experimental TV photography method was used to investigate the effects of operating parameters on the circulation rate, and a correlation was proposed. This paper also reveals the operating condition under which a steady circulation of bed particles was formed. The results obtained in this study are available for the design of an internal circulation fluidized bed combustor.

A method for measuring the particle size distribution of irregularly shaped and large particles in a Reynolds number which varied from 122 to 633 has been developed from the relationship between the pressure drop, ΔPi, across a fixed and a fluidized bed and the superficial velocity, ui. It is recognized by experiments that the equivalent diameter in the fixed and the fluidized bed corresponds to the volume-surface mean diameter, i. e. the specific surface.
The particle size distributions calculated by a computer analysis of the ΔPi and ui were in good agreement with the particle size distributions obtained by the weighed measurement of glass beads, crushed glass and crushed rocks.

The flow characteristics of powders have been evaluated by using a vibrating powder tester. A detecting sphere attached to the force transducer is displaced horizontally within the powder bed at various rates. The resistance force has been measured as a function of the displacement velocity of the sphere. The relationship between force and displacement velocity has been described by a rheological model of the type τ=m(dv/dy)n. The coating effect of a small amount of fine powder on the change of the flow characteristics of powder bed was measured.
