    The following results were obtained by using a high-speed mixer granulator and investigating the relationship between the granularity and wettability of aluminum hydroxide and calcium carbonate powders that were surface-treated with stearic acid:
    (1) The granulation limit had a strong relationship to dispersibility in water and to the contact angle of the sample powder. Granulation was possible by using water with powders consisting partly of hydrophilic powders.
    (2) An induction period of granulation was necessary for seed growth in powders which were highly hydrophobic. This period was influenced by the added water content, mixing speed and the wettability of the sample powder.
    (3) The fine powder generation ratio of granules was less with powders which were made partly of hydrophobic than non-treated powders.

    The cooling DSC technique was employed to measure the heat of freezing H of water present in the vicinity of the surface of ceramic powder particles. The powders used were α-Al2O3, ultrafine SiO2, kaolin-clay and ZrO2 being partially stabilized with Y2O3 (Y-PSZ). The thermodynamic stability of the vicinal water was in the order of ultrafine SiO2>>kaolin clay>α-Al2O3≥Y-PSZ. The differences were also clearly seen in the relationship of H to Tr (freezing onset temperature) and to t (thickness of the water molecule layer on the surface)

    In order to obtain knowledge on the preparation of fine particles embedded membranes, the dispersion of synthetic zeolite particles with a strong hydrophilic surface in non-aqueous solutions was studied using syndiotic 1, 2 polybutadiene as a polymer (membrane material). A mixture of solvent/non-solvent was used to control solvency conditions for the polymer. The results indicated that the adsorbed polymer improved the effectiveness of the dispersion and the amount polymer adsorbed increased with increasing volume fraction of nonsolvent. The best dispersion occurred slightly before the θ point. The effect of the solvency on the dispersion was elucidated by the theory of steric stabilization. Surface modification by a coupling agent gave a significant increase in polymer adsorption and hence good dispersion while bringing about a reduction in water vapor adsorption onto the zeolite particles.

    Experimental and theoretical studies were conducted on the measurement and evaluation of the contact potential difference between various powders and a metal. The apparent dielectric constant of the powder layer that appeared in theory was also measured and compared using some theoretical models. It was confirmed that the apparent contact potential difference of a polymer powder is proportional to the square of the powder-layer thickness as theoretically predicted.
    The evaluation of the time-change of the contact potential difference gives the relaxation characteristics of the initial charge of the powder layer. Also, it was found that the measuring time is drastically reduced by thinning the powder layer.
    The relationship between the packing fraction of the powder layer and the apparent dielectric constant was also found to be well represented by Maxwell's equation.
