Life cycle assessment is currently the most popular and typical method in considering the environmental impact of recycling. We proposed a new recycling process in which copper is recovered from printed wiring board scraps. We succeeded to evaluate the environmental impact of the recycling process and compared it with the conventional extracting process of copper. Printed wiring board scraps were crushed using crushers as a pretreatment, and the product was ground using a hammer mill. The ground products were then separated by a heavy liquid separation using tetrabromoethane. The precipitate contained a high concentration of copper while the float consisted mainly of epoxy resin and glass fibers. We measured the copper content of both fractions by ICP analysis, and evaluated the environmental impact by comparing them with those of extracting process, using NIRE-LCA Ver. 3. As a result, CO2 emission in the recycling process was comparable to that in the extracting process.

Zinc dust generated from recycling process of steelmaking dust must be pretreated by sintering prior to the reuse of zinc as a smelting raw material. The present paper proposes a novel magnetic separation process with ultrasonic dispersion, which recovers zinc oxide with the average size of 1 micron from the zine dust with a low energy consumption and recycling cost. The proposed prosess significantly improved the recovery and grade of zinc concentrate (contained 64% zinc at 80% recovery) over the conventional magnetic separation, without influencing the solid-liquid separation characteristics of concentrates. The improvement in the recovery and grade was resulted from the dispersion of fine particle aggregates in the magnetic separation cell by the ultrasonic wave.

Rapid mutual separation of ultra-fine particles in suspension is one of the most difficult techniques in materials processing. A column bed method, which utilizes the difference in surface characteristics of particles, was investigated for mutual separation. Fibrous slag packed in a column was used as a collector. The fibrous slag offers large surface area for selective adhesion of particles, which results in mutual separation of ultra-fine particles. In mutual separation of mixed hematite (107.2nm) and silica (142.9nm) suspension, only the hematite attached onto the fibrous slag and the silica was separated in the effluent. In the present work, mutual separation was achieved at pH11 by zinc hydroxide modified fibrous slag. The limiting particle concentration to achieve mutual separetion was 50mg/dm3. Mutual separation of large particles (300nm) was achieved at pH10. These results were well explained by DLVO theory. These novel methods were proved to be simple, quick, and cost effective process.

Size classification of ultrafine particles is one of the most difficult techniques in materials processing. We developed a novel ultrafine particle separation technique based on interfacial properties. In this work, rapid size classification of silica particles (100-300nm) from suspension was examined in various solution chemistry by column bed system packed with fibrous ferro-nickel slag (FS). Smaller particles were selectively attached to the FS, while larger ones had passed through the column bed as an effluent. Classification efficiency depended on pH and ionic strength. Optimum classification was attained at pH3.5 and 10mmol/dm3 KNO3. These results were explained by DLVO theory, suggesting that surface characteristics of both particle and collector medium virtually determined the separation efficiency. Furthermore, particle concentration and flow velocity had influence on classification efficiency. This method proved to be simple, rapid, and cost-effective for classifying ultrafine particles in aqueous media.
