Method of the numerical representation of hand-feeling of fabrics has been investigated by the HandEvalua tion and Standardization Committeeduring two years and the standard feeling of the three main-hand, sti ffness, fullness and smoothness have been discussed and expressed by numerical values.
Author has started at the same time the research for finding the transformation formula of the physical properties to the numerical values of the hand-feeling. The physical properties, which are mainly composed of the mechaical properties, are expressed by six groups, that are extentional property, compressional property, the surface property including the surrface friction and the contour, bending property, shearing property and dimensional and weight properties . Each of the groups contains two or three characteristic values, for example, the extensional property group contains tensile energy, resilience and non-linearity of the stress-strain curve, and the surface group contains the mean value and the mean deviation of frictional coefficient and the mean deviation of surface contour.
On the other hand, a new system for measuring those characteristic values was designed by author . This system is consisted of four units, the tensile and shear testing machine, the bending tester, the compressional testing macine and surface testing machine .
All of the characteristic values from the six propertygroups can be perfectly measured by those four instruments easily and quickly with high stability and high sensitivity.
This system is now extensively working for, the evaluation of hand-feeling of fabrics.
