Cotton fibers were pretreated with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (NaOHaq.), liquid ammonia (L.NH
3) and their combination (NaOHaq/L. NH
3). The effects of the pretreatments on Wash & Wear and mechanical properties of cotton fabrics finished with dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) and vapor-phase-formaldehyde (HCHO) were compared.
The pretreatment effects on Wash & Wear properties and tensile strength of cotton fabrics crosslinked with DMDHEU and vapor-phase-HCHO were found to increase in the following order :
DMDHEU : control<<NaOHaq.<NaOHaq/L. NH
3_??_ L. NH
3.
HCHO : control_??_NaOHaq.<<NaOHaq/L. NH
3 L.<NH
3.
It is likely that the results obtained in this experiment coincide with the size and distribution of porestructures of the pretreated fibers.
