The drafting force has been only the way to evaluate the roller drafting aspects. The lateral deformation of sliver (LD) would be newly proposed as a significant expression of the roller drafting adding to the conventional drafting force.
In this paper, the general properties of LD and relations to the drafting force were investigated . The two phenomena were simultaneously recorded at several drafting conditions.
Generally, LD curves show high negative correlation to drafting force curves, and also to delivered sliver irregularity curves. The mean, the coefficient of variation (CV) and the peak height in power spectrum of the LD curves were calculated, and the effects of drafting conditions-draft ratio, roller gauge and number of drawin on them were discussed. It becomes clear that the CV of the LD curves showes the same tendency to that of the drafting foxce curves for drafting conditions.
The LD could be considered as one of the most important expressions to show the roller drafting aspects. It would have possibility to be utilized as the means of drafting control and improvement of drafting machine.
