    This paper is concerned with the emulsification of residual fuel to improve the combustion of marine diesel engines.
    The experiment was conducted to investigate the effective water particles size and the stability of emulsified fuel, and the effects of water particles size and water content ratio which were dispersed in fuel on engine performances and burning characteristics were investigated by means of a marine diesel engine.
    It has been found that the minuteness and homogeneity of water particles dispersed in fuel are the most important factors for applying emulsified fuel to marine diessel engines.

    Experiments on piston ring scuffing were conducted using a simulation test equipment of relatively large size of increased similarity with actual marine diesel engines, and a practical empirical formula was obtained. In addition, scuffing was caused to occur in practice using actual medium speed diesel engines to verify said empirical formula, and it was found that this formula was effective for judgment in the stage, of design and development.
    This paper suggests that the important factor that obstructs evolution of future diesel engines is piston ring scuffing based on said practical empirical formula, and it also describes the direction to be taken into the future.

    A crosshead-pin bearing with axial oil grooves in a two-stroke cycle marine diesel engine is inferior in the load-carrying capacity, since the load acting on the bearing is always unidirectional and the sliding speed is low besides oscillatory motion. Two possible methods for improving the load-carrying capacity have been proposed. One is an offset bearing system that both the journal and the bearing are axially divided into two segments with offset centerlines. The other is a bearing system combined with a circular journal and an elliptical bearing.
    The theoretical analyses are conducted for the comparison of load-carrying capacity among three type of the crosshead- pin bearing, a conventional type employed widely, an offest type and an elliptical type. Furthermore, the influences of the bearing oscillation angle on the load- carrying capacity are examined theoretically and experimentally.

    The transient characteristics of single- phase natural circulation flow caused by pump tripping are investigated experimentally and analytically for five different cooling configurations in loop-type PWRs for marine applications. The loop consists of a heater box, a cooler, and connecting bent pipes with inverse U shapes. The cooler Jacket is designed to provide five different cooling configurations; three inverse U-shaped and two straight tube types. The experiments are carried out using water as the working fluid at atmospheric pressure by holding the heater input constant ( Q = 0.25kW to 4.0kW) . Under a certain condition, an unstable flow, which developes a reverse flow with a periodic oscillation, occurs. The flow stability maps are obtained for the heat input Q vs the heater height ELhfor five cooling configurations. Furthermore, a one-dimensional nonlinear analysis is carried out. The analytical results agree well with the experimental results.

    Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) succeeded in retrofitting the contra-rotating propeller system to a car carrier first in the world in August, 1988, as a rusult of five years technical studies concering the contrarotating dual shafts. Through the sea trials and commercial operation for two years, large energy saving merit and sufficient reliability were verified; i.e.
    (1) The energy saving was 16% on the sea trials and 13.5% in average (about 10-17%) in the ship's service operation.
    (2) The results of bearing temperature and oil film thickness measurements were found to be almost as designed, and no abnormal condition was observed in the bearings, gears, etc. as a result of the overhauling after one year.
    This paper describes the technical features and the contents of the verification concerning the MHI-type Asynchronous Contra-Rotating Properller (ACRP) shafting system.
