On a stand point of economical using, high speed steels have been welded to carbon steels by many kinds of welding methods such as solderings, electric flash wel-ding and other electric resistance weldings and also de-posit metal of high speed steel have been made on the carbon steel shank by atomic hydrogen welding method or oxyacetylene gas welding method.
This paper pointed out a fact that electric metallic arc welding with 18-8 stainless steel electrode was a most practical welding method for use in connection with high speed cutting tools of peculiar type to which other welding methods were not expedient. High speed steel and carbon steel can also be welded with ordinary mild steel electrode but cracks are apt to occur in the welding joint-commonly in high speed steel side-caused by the formation of carbides and blow holes in deposit and by the hardening of heat affected region of base metal adjacent to deposit.
It is considered that easy melting of 18-8 stainless steel electrode and desirable toughness of its deposit are enable to get rid of these crack failures of weld.

最近十年間に於ける不銹鋼の用途は工業のあらゆる部門に進展した. 就中化學工業の急速なる發展に伴ふ製品の改善進歩は眞に目醒しいものがある. 殊に高温度に於ける耐銹耐熱鋼例へばNichrothrm合金の出現をみるに至りては驚かざるを得ない. 不銹鋼の用途が年と共に増大する理由は此の金屬の有する物理的, 機械的諸性質の優秀にして他の金屬には其の比を見ざる高度なる耐蝕性に依るのである. 然し此の金屬の工業的價値を決定づける要素は此の金屬の有する熔接性 (Weldability) にあると思ふ. 如何なる容器でも繼手なくして經濟的に製作し得るものは少い. 殊に後述する如き理由に依り鋲接が困難なる此の種金屬に於ては熔接性こそ重要なる因子である. 飜つて不銹鋼の熔接の分野を見るに果して熔接が正しく認識せられ何入も確信し得る熔接技術が普遍され居るであらうか, 多くの文獻にも見られる如く不銹鋼の熔接は既に常識である可き今日, 尚幾多の缺陥を耳にし目にするは眞に遣憾に堪へない. 此の原因は此の種金屬の不慣れなる設計, 工作等に因る場合も多々あるであらうが一言にして言ふならば熔接技術上の些細なる缺陥にある様に思はれる. 筆者は極めて常識的ではあるが以下18: 8不銹鋼の熔接技術上必要と思はれる用途, 成分, 利用及び發達の沿革等を述べ, 更に進んで硝酸製造装置等に實例をとり, 熔接容器製作等に關し筆者の實際に經験せる熔接技術上, 主として電氣熔接の問題に就て菲才を省みず述べる.
