This paper is a further report on the program of arc welding of structual Ducol Steel. The previous paper presented weldability and strength data for welded Ducol Steel. Similar data is here presented. The carbon range of parent metal is extended from 0.23 to 0.34% and the manganese from 0.92 to 1.47%. Other materials and methods of test were included in the previous paper.
Mild steel wire can be used as a core rod and the coating must be modified with special elements. Tensile test, bending elongation, hardness test and micrscopic examinations showed the fact that Ducol Steel can be welded satisfactory by ordinary welding manipulation as in the welding of plain carbon steel. But bending elongation of welded joint was slightly decreased and hardness of heat affected region of the base metal adjacent to deposit was increased than the case of welded mild steel.
Selction of electrodes is most important on the welding of Ducol steel and the welding results mainly depend upon the qualities of coated electrodes. Deposit metal of higher tensile strength (but lower ductility) is obtained by commercial coated electrodes. But deposit of proper ductility is indispensable from the stand points of practical applications.
