Generally speaking, the coated electrode for mild steel divides into two kinds : of gas shield and slag shield.
A part of the carbonate decomposes into metallic oxide and CO
2-gas by dint of the heat t of high temperature due to electric arc of welding, when the carbonate is used as coating material. The author investigated how the metallic oxide in them should act on as slag shield and also in the case of CO
2 gas, how to act as gas shield. The carbonates used for the purpose are here found both chemicals and minerals. The general properties are investigated concerning the welding process in the 1st Report which is abstracted as follows :- (1) Chemicals act as gas shield on one hand and minerals as slag shield on another. (2) The carbonates of the 1st series (Li, Na) and the 2nd series Agroup (Ca, Sr, Ba) in Periodic Table are proved good properties in welding. (3) The carbonates of Mn and Mg, cause many blow holes in deposited metal which can not be taken to the purpose. (4) When carbonate is added to some other coating materials, the comparatively good mechanical properties are shown in the combination of the weight percentage of four and ten.
