For the purpose of studying the effect of denaturated lipid and tocopherol on mitochondrial oxidation system, the following experiments were carried out. The increase of TBA value during incubation of rat liver 9, 000×g supernatant was depressed by prior addition of tocopherol. The TBA value of supernatant originated from starved rat was higher than that from normal rat, and was also depressed by the addition of tocopherol. The relationship between peroxide value and TBA value during incubation of lipid from Torulopsis utilis was tested and the parallelism between them was comfirmed. The succinate ubiquinone reducing activity of acetone treated mitochondria was restored by the addition of Torula lipid. Ageing of Torula lipid in ethanol increased TBA value and lost the ability of Torula lipid to restore the succinate ubiquinone reducing activity. Torula lipid which was protected from the increase of TBA value by the addition of tocopherol preserved the ability to restore the enzyme activity for long time comparatively.

It is necessary from sanitary point of view that water for swimming pool is kept free from germs, and disinfectants containing chlorine have been widly used for this purpose. Recently, a novel disinfectant composed of neutral salt of calcium hypochlorite was developed in Japan, and the large tablet being especially suitable for disinfection of swimming pool water has been marketed since last year. In order to establish a sanitary control method of swimming pool water with the product, experiments on both continuous charge method and direct throw method of the tablets were conducted at the municipal swimming pool in Takada, Niigata-prefecture, over one swimming season. It was proved that the above mentioned methods are satisfactory to the purpose.

A sensitive and specific analysis has been developed for 2-(2-furyl)-3-(5-nitro-3-furyl) acrylamide (Furylfuramide) utilizing gas chromatography (GLC) with hydrogen flame ionization detector (FID) and electron capture detector (ECD). The separation of the trans and cis isomer by direct injection was established using the column paking of 1.5% QF-1 on Anakrom at 200°with nitrogen as carrier gas. In analysis of Furylfuramide these isomers must be identified, and so it seemed that GLC determination was more suitable than chemical methods using spectrophotomeric absorption. Sensitivities obtained were 1γ(FID) and 0.01γ (ECD). Moreover, it was definitetly cleared that cis type of Frylfuramide had two kinds of crystals, α-form (m.p. 160°) and β-form (m.p. 185°), and the transition from α-form to β-form occurred at 160°.

Disposable polystyrene syringes and needles were irradiated with cobalt-60 gamma rays at various doses, and were subjected to sterility test, safety test, and function tests such as, breaking test, load test, fluid tightness test. A dose of 3 Mrad sterilized completely the samples inoculated heavily with Bacillus spores. Even at this dose level, neither the occurrence of the toxicity nor detrimental effect on the function of syringes were observed. From these results, it is presumed that 3 Mrad is suitable dose for the radiation sterilization of disposable syringes and needles.

Thin layer chromatogaphy for the separation and identification of nine inorganic cations was investigated. From mixed solution of metal ions, dithizonates of Pd²⁺, Hg²⁺, and Cu²⁺ were first extracted with 0.1% chloroform solution of dithizone at pH 0∼1 (N-HCl solution) and then dithizonates of Bi³⁺, Cd²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Pb²⁺ at pH 7∼8. These dithizonates were separated on MN-silica gel S-HR layer by using carbon tetrachloride : methylenechloride : benzene (1 : 7 : 4) as developer. It was possible to identify each dithizonate by characteristic color without detecting reagent.

It is reported that fluorine is emitted to the atmosphere from various industrial process such as the manufacturing of aluminium, clay bricks, phosphate fertilizers and steel. Fluorine concentration in air of china manufacturing area and in raw materials of china were measured. Alkaline paper method was applied for measuring fluorine in air, and modified distillation method was used for fluorine in raw materials of china. From the results of this investigation, it was shown that fluorine content in green body and glaze of china materials were 3.4-16.3mg/100g, and the content in manufacturing were less than 3mg/100g. More than 90% of fluorine in these raw materials was volatilized by firing in the process of china manufacturing, therefore it was supposed that measurable amounts of fluorine was emitted to the atmosphere in china manufacturing area. Fluorine values in the air in china manufacturing area were 3.1μg/d/100cm² paper, and these vulues were 4 times as high as the values in Gifu city-commercial city. In the nearest observation point to china factories, the values were 20 times higher than to that in Gifu city. From these results, it was concluded that china manufacturing was the main source of fluorine emission.

Iron and copper in hot springs were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Iron was determined by this method directly from sanples concentrated to one tenths. Copper was determined by this method after extraction into methyl isobutylketone (MIBK) with 0.1% sodium diethyldithiocarbamate. Then, the same results as those from colorimetry were obtained by this method simply and quickly.

By depth of the water, furthermore, it is found that the contamination increased in order of the upper layer, under and middle of sea water.
