    Recently, attention has being given to combining currently used techniques to derive desirable properties that hitherto could not be obtained. Accordingly, the effect of combining of gas soft-nitriding and laser transformation hardening on S45C and SCM435, and specifically on wear resistance, was investigated.
    Results obtained are summarized as follows:
    1) The nitride layer formed by gas soft-nitriding was considerably decomposed by laser beam irradiation.
    2) X-ray diffraction on specimens subjected to the combination treatment comfirmed the small amount of ε and γ', together with retained γ and FeO.
    3) It was observed that the combination-treated specimen had a fine nitrogen-containing martensite structure with a high hardness of Hv 820.
    4) Wear resistance of the combination-treated specimens improved markedly, particularly in the range of stationary wear. This was considered to be due to the high hardness of the fine nitrogen-containing martensite.

    One of the characteristics of amorphous alloy is its superior corrosion resistance. In this study, a Ti-Ni alloy film, which is known to be a material easily made amorphous, was prepared by RF sputtering on water-cooled glass substrate. The structure and corrosion behavior of the film were investigated, and the results obtained are as follows:
    (1) Ti-Ni alloy films were confirmed to be uniform in composition throughout the entire thickness for all compositions of the films, and the level of impurities in the films was very low.
    (2) Amorphous films were made at atomic percentage of from approximately 30 and 70% Ti, and superior corrosion resistance was observed when Ti content was >50 at.%.
    (3) 54 and 68 at.% Ti-Ni amorphous films on glass substrates annealed at 500°C, which is above the crystallization temperature, showed crystallization, and corrosion resistance deteriorated somewhat in 96% H2SO4. When annealed at 200-400°C, which is below the crystallization temperature, no crystallization was observed and corrosion resistance increased slightly.

    SiC films were deposited by magnetron sputtering using Ar sputtering gases having various volume fractions of N2 gas. The chemical composition, quality and electric properties of the deposited films were investigated with the following results.
    The hardness of the deposited films decreased linearly with the increase in the amount of N2 gas added, reaching a constant value of HK 1300 at a volume fractions of N2 to Ar of 30∼40%.
    Deposited films also became celluler in structure with increases in the amount of N2 gas.
    In SiC films deposited using Ar gas only, silicon and carbon content was 55 and 45 mol. percent respectively. These values decreased with increases in the amount of N2 gas, and the nitrogen content of the films increased.
    At an N2/Ar gas volume fraction of 30%, the silicon, carbon and nitrogen in the films reached the constant values of 30, 20 and 50 mol. percent respectively. X-ray diffraction indicated that all the deposited films were amorphous, and EPMA and infrared analysis suggested that the elemental nitrogen in the films formed Si-N bonds.
    Electrical measurements made it clear that the SiC films had the NTC property and that the resistivity and the B constant of the films increased with increasing N2 gas.

    The processes of initial deposition and film growth of crystalline Ni-Mo-P alloy films by electroless plating were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in comparison with those of crystalline Ni-P alloy films by electroless plating. In case of the Ni-P alloy films, very fine grains are packed and grown, so closely that the grain structure is relatively uniform. Whereas in case of the Ni-Mo-P alloy films, nucleation occurs on Pd catalyst particles and the very fine grainy layer grows to a thickness of 300Å. At thicknesses greater than 300Å, the growth of nuclei occurs so preferentially that grain size increases. It is suggested that this film growth in the region of its thickness greater than 300Å is related to the nonuniform conditions in the crystalline state.

    The thermal stability of amorphous Ni-Mo-P alloy films deposited from an electroless plating bath was investigated by comparing with ordinary amorphous Ni-P alloy films by DSC analysis and TEM observation. The amorphous Ni-Mo-P films display a higher activation energy of Ni3P formation, and thus tend to crystallize less readily than the amorphous Ni-P film. Structural observations by TEM and THEED, show that the structural change in the Ni-Mo-P films occurs at higher temperature region than that in the Ni-P films for films of the same P content. The films of amorphous Ni-Mo-P and Ni-P at the same enthalpy for Ni3P formation show structural changes at the same temperature.

    Nickel-cobalt-boron alloy films were formed by electroless plating from an Ni-Co-B plating bath containing borax as an additive and hydrazinium chloride as reducing agent. The properties of the films thus obtained were investigated by noting the effect of each deposition parameter on composition, deposition rate, throwing power and uniformity. Film deposition rate was observed to increase with an increase in cobalt ion concentration, and with a rise in the temperature and pH of the bath. The boron content of the films increased in proportion to the nickel content in the films, and showed a higher value the lower the cobalt ion concentration and pH of the bath. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the crystal structure of the Ni-Co-B alloy films exhibited a diffraction peak on a higher orientation plane of {220} that was not found in deposits from plating baths of nickel or cobalt alone. The throwing power and uniformity of these alloy films were satisfactory.

    Studies were conducted on a new process of electroless plating characterized by pretreating successively with aminosilane and PdCl2. It is noteworthy that in an adsorption study of palladium from PdCl2 aqueous solution in the pretreating process a multilayer of palladium ion was formed on the surface of the aminosilylated glass beads. Different structural models were proposed for the adsorption states before and after the estimated amount of saturated monolayer adsorption, leading to the proposing of a coordinated combination mode (I) for the former and as polymeric chains (II) for the latter. The correlation between the amount of palladium adsorbed and catalytic activity in electroless plating was examined, and it was found that the state of palladium adsorption greatly influence the reaction velocity and procedure. Specifically, the reaction proceeds at a constant rate for substrates coverd with less than a saturated monolayer, while the reaction accelerates accompanied with the decomposition of the bath for multilayer adsorption samples. These phenomena were explained in reference to the structural models proposed.

    Charpy impact tests were carried out in accordance with an experimental design on high-strength low alloy rolled structural steel with a grade of 785MPa, and on high-strength bolt steels with a grade of between 785 and 1177MPa such as low carbon boron steel. The following results were obtained.
    (1) For the structural steel, impact values were not affected by the galvanizing conditions, but the impact values of the galvanized steel, under the restraint of plastic deformation by the cδ1 layer, which was harder than the steel, became lower by about 10 to 12% at the upper transition temperature curves.
    (2) For bolt steels, when the hardness of the steel was less than the cδ1 layer, galvanizing decreased the impact values of the steels at room. For galvanized SNCM steel, these value decreased by about 12% after shot blasting and 20% after acid pickling. The decrease for galvanized LCB steel was about 9%. When, on the other hand, the steel was harder than the cδ1 layer, these effects were not observed.
    The above results indicate that when the cδ1 layer is harder than the steel, impact values decrease under the restraint of plastic deformation by the cδ1 layer.
