We propose a new spontaneous supersymmetry breaking mechanism, in which extra compact dimensions play an important role. To illustrate our mechanism, we study a simple model consisting of two chiral superfields. where one spatial dimension is compactified on a circle S^1. It is shown that supersymmetry is spontaneously broken irrespective of the radius of the circle, and also that the translational invariance for the S^1-direction and a global symmetry are spontaneously broken when the radius becomes larger than a critical radius. These results are expected to be general features of our mechanism. We further discuss that our mechanism may be observed as the O'Raifeartaigh type of supersymmetry breaking at low energies.

I report the recent development of 4D simplicial quantum gravity. The phase structure of the dynamical triangulation model with introducing the N_V copies of U(1) gauge fields is investigated. The phase transition of the model with vector field (N_V=1) is smooth as compared with the pure gravity(N_V=0). Then, it means the possibility to take the continuum limit at the critical point.

We make a semiclassical analysis of thermal pair creations of quasiparticles at various filling factors in quantum Hall systems. It is argued that the gap energy is reduced considerably by the Coulomb potential made by impurities. It is also shown that a tunneling process becomes important at low temperature and at strong magnetic field. We fit typical experimental data excellently based on our semiclassical results of the gap energy.

We propose that Stromingers method is in fact applicable to other asymptotically AdS_3 black holes and gives the correct functional form of the entropy. As far as we are aware, all solutions are consistent with our proposal.

We investigate the behavior of Matrix theory in the large N limit following the conjectured correspondence with supergravity. We have predicted the explicit forms of two-point functions of Matrix-theory operators and checked that they behave as expected from generalized conformal symmetry. We found an anomalous behavior for the scaling with N associated to the longitudinal boost transformation. (Based on the work with T. Yoneya, hep-th/9907027)

We discuss some issues on the toplolgy of spacetime in matrix models. Especially, as an possible manifestation of toroidal topology, we investigate the unitary formulation of IIB matrix model. The model exhibits supersymmetry in the large N limit.
