With the use of various realistic two-nucleon forces between the valence neutrons, three-body structure of ^6He=^4He+n+n and the short-range correlations between the halo neutrons are investigated. Use is made of the coupled-rearrangement-channel variational method with the Gaussian basis functions. The basis functions are composed of newly developed Gaussian lobe functions with infinitesimally shift parameter. Usefulness of the method is examined in the three-nucleon bound-state calculation with those realistic forces such as Paris, Bonn and Argonne potentials.

Structure of C isotopes is studied systematically with antisymmetrized molecular dynamics(called as AMD). The structure changes drastically as the neutron number increases. One of the most interesting points is that the exotic C nuclei near the neutron dripline may have the neutron distribution in the outer region than proton density which is considered to be of neutron skin structure.

The transfer and fusion reactions are studied for reactions between a stable and an unstable nucleus with neutron skin, taking as examples the reactions ^<40>Ca + ^<16,28>O. The two-dimensional time-dependent Hartree-Fock method is used. It is shown that, in such reactions, the nucleon transfer is enhanced enormously for both protons and neutrons. The neutron skin does not enhance the fusion cross section contrary to the usual expectation.

The electric quadrupole excitation of unstable nuclei with the neutron skin is studied in terms of a Hartree-Fock RPA calculation, taking ^<28>O as an example. It is found that there are giant excitation peaks, referred to as giant neutron modes, below the isoscalar giant resonance and these peaks consist of neutron excitations only. Their transition densities are shown to be extended radially in comparison to the isoscalar giant resonance. A strong correlation between B(E2) sum rule of the giant neutron modes and the neutron skin thickness is found.

We study the ground states properties of the even-even neutron-deficient Hg and Pb isotopes using deformed relativistic mean field formalism. The ground state structures are investigated by comparing the prolate, oblate and spherical solutions. We observe shape transitions from oblate to prolate and prolate to oblate at A = 1784 and A = 188, respectively, for Hg isotoes. Some low-lying superdeformed configurations are found in the Hg isotoes, and found to be the ground state for ^<180>Hg. Studies of the quadrupole and the hexadecapole moments, density distributions and the single-particle level structure clearly indicate that some of the neutron-deficient isotopes having proton number Z = 82 do not behave as good magic nuclei.
