We review the construction of the discretized model of ref. [1] which reproduces, at the k-th multicritical point, properties of the continuum 2d supergravity coupled to (2,4k) superconformal matter. We also review the double scaling limit of the model discussed in ref. [7, 8] and comment on the issue of the super KP hierarchy.

The recent exact result of the 2 dim quantum gravity is analysed in the standpoint of the ordinary renormalization group procedure. The higher-derivative term ,R^2, is added to give the kinetic term to the theory. We examine the quantum effect in the perturbative way (loop-expansion). The effective perturbation parameter is 1/(26-c_m) where c_m is the central charge of the matter theory. In the present approach the conformal (exact) result can be naturally interpreted as the fixed point of the renormalization flow. Some critical quantities such as β-functions and anomalous dimensions are derived in the leading order and compared with the known exact result.

In this talk, we first review the possibility of matrix models toward a nonperturbative (critical) string theory. We then discuss whether the c = 1 matrix model can describe the black hole solution of 2D critical string theory. We show that there exists a class of integral transformations which send the Virasoro condition for the t achy on field around the 2D black hole to that around the linear dilaton vacuum. In particular, we construct an explicit integral formula wihich describes a continuous deformation of the linear dilaton vacuum to the black hole background.

It is pointed out that a part of gauge invariance in low energy region, say, lower than GUT or the Planck energy could be an induced symmetry describable with the Berry phase potential due to partial compactification of a higher dimensional space-time. A model Lagrangian with a U(1) gauge symmetry in six dimensions is shown to double the symmetry in four dimensions to enjoy U(1) × U(1) in a limit where the compactification mass scale is sent to infinity. Generalization to non-Abelian theories is discussed.
