An international joint program of Engineering Design has started in 2004 between Kanazawa Institute of Technology, Singapore Polytechnic in Singapore, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the United States. Students from the three institutions worked on the same engineering design project, the main theme of which was, “Bus Transportation/Urban Transportation System in the 21st Century”. Student teams chose their own project themes from specific design areas, which were related to the main theme. Their achievements were unique in their solutions due to the differences in society and culture in Japan, the United States and Singapore, although all the design teams followed the same engineering design procedures. In this paper, the international joint project is discussed in details.

Recently, decline of basic learning ability for science has become a serious problem. We experimentally developed knowledge-based e-Learning system and confirmed its effectiveness. In this research, we have studied a blended learning using e-Learning and paper-based homework. In consequence, its effectiveness has been confirmed. Furthermore, we have extended our e-Learning system to knowledge-based retrieval system, and constructed database for science and technology in the university.

We have developed educational materials to learn about sequential control technology for engineering students. The educational materials have use-friendly characteristics and high-visibility. The characteristics are based on Keller's ARCS model of motivation. At the end of experiments, a questionnaire about these educational materials was administered to the students. The analysis of the questionnaire showed that most students achieved a good understanding and were very interested in experiments of sequential control.

Because computer based testing (CBT) has many advantages compared with the conventional paper and pencil testing (PPT) examination method, CBT has begun to be used in various situations in Japan, such as in qualifying examinations and in the TOEFL. This paper describes the usefulness and the problems of CBT applied to a regular college examination. The regular computer literacy examinations for first year students were held using CBT, and the results were analyzed. Responses to a questionnaire indicated many students accepted CBT with no unpleasantness and considered CBT a positive factor, improving their motivation to study. CBT also decreased the work of faculty in terms of marking tests and reducing data.

Since the introduction of a new legal education system in 2004, some of Japanese legal educational institutions have changed into professional schools which names are Law School. These law schools are required not only theoretical studies but also professional skills training. Law students, however, have limited time to complete this agenda, so law professors have to teach courses effectively. In this paper, the authors present the situation of ICT usage in Nagoya University Law School as a case study to describe and to critique systems to support theoretical studies and professional skills training.

An introductory program “Exercise for engineers in mechanical disassembly” is an exercise that ten students of every team disassemble a motor scooter to the components and then assemble again to the initial form in 15 weeks. The purpose of this program is to introduce mechanical engineering by touching the real machine and learning how it is composed from various mechanical parts to the students at the early period after the entrance into the university. Additional short lectures by young teachers and a special lecture by a top engineer in the industry encourage the students to combine the actual machine and the mechanical engineering subjects. Furthermore, various educations such as group leader system, hazard prediction training, parts filing are included in this program. As a result, students recognize the importance of the mechanical engineering study and the way of group working.

Owing to the increasing attention to the engineering ethics matter, its education has become the core of the engineering education. Many people agree that it should be given not just as a course but across the entire curriculum. However, the engineering instructors would find it difficult to integrate the ethics education into their courses because they have had no training in this area for themselves. To solve this problem, Dr. Michael Davis proposed “Micro-Insertion” technique by which instructors can introduce a small unit of ethics education into their courses. As a part of the curriculum revision in 2004, Kanazawa Institute of Technology implemented the engineering ethics education in several engineering courses adopting the “Micro-Insertion” technique along with establishing a new required engineering ethics course. This paper describes our unique approach to the Ethics Across the Curriculum (EAC) .

Student evaluations of instruction have been conducted through questionnaires in a freshman class for fundamental physics at Kanazawa Institute of Technology. The data from the evaluations are analyzed by principal-component analysis, which reveals three components with an eigenvalue greater than 1. The first and second components are interpreted as the quality of the instruction and the basic scholastic ability of the students evaluating the instruction, respectively. We find that the first component can be controlled by the instructor, but the second one cannot be. Correlation between the data from the student evaluations and students' exam scores is analyzed by multiple-regression analysis, showing that the first two components in the data are significant predictors of the exam scores. The analysis shows that the instructor's effort of improving the quality of the teaching (first component) would be able to significantly raise the students' exam scores.

The authors are conducting experience-based engineering educational programs for elementary and junior high school students with the aim to provide a chance for them to experience mechanical production. As part of this endeavor, we planned and conducted a program called “Fabrication of Original Magnet Plates by Casting” for elementary school students. This program included a course for leading nature laws and logical thinking method. Prior to the program, a preliminary program was applied to school teachers to get comments and to modify for the program accordingly. The children responded excellently to the production process which realizes their ideas, but it was found that the course on natural laws and logical methods need to be improved to draw their interest and attention. We will continue to plan more effective programs, deepening ties with the local community.

In the 2nd All Japan College of Technology Design Competition, the students majoring department of architecture (included architecture course in advanced course of Architecture and Civil Engineering) of Toyota National College of Technology won the highest award in all 3 sections of the held competition. In this paper, 2 sections of design course in awarded 3 sections was taken up. In addition, while reporting the circumstances and measure to the competition participation, the revision of a molding subject performed in recent years and the relation of this winning-a-prize result were considered.
