Teachers are always looking for new interesting ways to motivate students to learn in the classroom. While teaching, teachers must make efforts to keep students’ attention throughout the class. The best way to keep students’ attention is to creative interesting activities. If they just sit passively, they will not absorb any information. The Central Council for Education in Japan has issued a report titled “Redesigning Compulsory Education for a New Era.” One of the concrete strategies is adopting and fostering teachers with passion, good teaching skills, and good character. Class activities should be aimed at developing a mind-set of positive attitude towards learning. Teachers with passion, good teaching skills, and good character will try to make class enjoyable and comfortable with all their might.

This paper describes an effective learning method using model rockets for junior high school students to increase their interest in science and engineering. First, we conducted the model rocket workshops and taught how to make model rockets for junior high school students. Next, we organized the model rocket competition that the participants compete for the accuracy of a model rocket’s landing point. Almost all the students took part in the competition using their own designed model rockets. The results of the questionnaire conducted for the competition participants indicated that a lot of participants enhanced the interest in model rockets. In this paper, we report that the experience-based learning gives children the opportunities to learn proactively towards the goal.

A new product development with sophisticated functions may cause the schedule delay, and higher development cost. One of the reasons is that the cross functional problems (CFPs) are difficult to analyze and to resolve. Often they will push back among groups to avoid the ownership. Moreover, the increasing number of groups segmented by specialization makes CFP difficult to manage. This paper describes ERAM (Extended Responsibility Assignment Matrix) . ERAM is a tool to implement a process to help reduce the occurrence of CFPs, and once occurred, to fix them smoothly. This method has a potential to improve the performance of the PBL with the industry-academia-government collaboration and the open innovation in which multiple organizations work together.

Educational institutions seek the development of co-creation skills that can resolve complicated social issues in cooperation with others. Thus, we built the Real-time Reflection (RTR) system, which can be self-reflective on a student’s experience in real time by using ICT. In this study, we outline the results of research on and analysis of the impact that RTR has on the collaborative creation activities of the group after introducing the RTR into a practical lesson exercise design. In class, groups of students designed a planning and sales promotion tool for specialty products for a PR event. We were asked to evaluate their designs and PR planning by showing them to experts. The results of examining the correlation between the evaluation by experts and the use frequency of the RTR of the variation showed a tendency toward a positive correlation. In addition, there is a strong correlation that groups tend to reflect repeatedly on a particular learning phase, including all the members of the group. We clarified that co-creation styles and the effect of learning are changed by reflection on learning phases.

Kanazawa Institute of Technology applies PBL to the backbone of its curriculum, and names it Project Design Program to grow up students into independently minded and actively engaged engineers. Through the Project Design courses for freshmen and sophomores, students constract teams and conduct the experiments to verify the hypotheses and ideas. However, since most students have not experienced such experiments at high schools, it is difficult for them to recognize many risk factors which occur during experiments. Therefore we have been integrating “Hiyari-Hatto” activities into the Project Design courses to ensure safety of students.

In order to evaluate an educational effect of an interdepartmental education program for the Project-Based Learning (PBL) type creative design and manufacturing, this paper describes the analysis results of questionnaire surveys based on 12 competency factors in "Fundamental Competencies for Working Persons" and of the competency tests in "Progress Report on Generic Skills (PROG)". The results of these competency tests in PROG were statistically considered by the Mann-Whitney test and the Wilcoxon test. As a result, it was found out that two competencies (action and thinking) of students were significantly different (p < 0.1) by attending a lecture in this education program. Consequently, the educational effect on this PBL education program was confirmed in an objective way.

This paper clarifies the importance of teamwork for development engineering human resources through the case of engineering education for college students. In Tokai Polytechnic College, students are encouraged to become an engineer so that they could participate actively in small and medium-sized enterprise. They are also needed to work in cooperation at workplace, however, it has been pointed out that they lack the level of basic teamwork skills necessary for them to become professionals, such as communication ability, interpersonal relationship skills and leadership. Therefore, we analyze basic teamwork skills that affect productivity and propose what kind of teaching is needed in developing engineering human resources.

A project schedule creation is an essential part to make the project success. Companies developing a new product are looking for a practical method to create a highly feasible project schedule which supports completion of the development work on the aggressive target. This paper proposes a new tool called, the Deliverables Dependency Matrix (DDM) . This new tool helps reduce the activity period by removing the ambiguity of deliverables passed from one organization to another. The paper also describes a schedule creation process utilizing DDM to shrink the original buffered schedule to the target, while keeping the commitment by all related organizations to the schedule. This method is expected to be applicable to the PBL course work in universities.

More than ten years we have provided the practical educational program of the main analytical device, the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) apparatus continuously. The participants of our program have been the all of the researchers using the analytical center in Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Osaka City University, including the chemical students, the graduate students and their teachers. The chemical course accepts several students from some national institutes of technology every year by the admission studies system, so that some engineering background is added a little in them. For those students, the program provides not only the operational guidance but also the education covering the wide area including from the basic principle and theory to the most advanced area of science. This paper proposes the detail contents and reviews of the positive effects of the program, especially to enhance their learning experiences and to educate the higher chemical engineers.
