The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) has played a central role in shaping the content of American engineering education over the last 120 years. It was founded as the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education in 1893 due to the growth in the number of American engineering schools in the late 19
th century. This growth was due in large part to the passage in 1862 of the Morrill Act, also known as the Land Grant College Act. As a result, the number of American engineering schools nearly tripled between 1860 and 1872, and enrollment continued to grow over the next several decades. Since these engineering schools were state rather than federal institutions, their offerings were highly diverse in content and method of instruction. A primary focus of the ASEE in its early years was to establish common educational standards to help unify the engineering profession. The ASEE was successful in these efforts, and the Society’ s current role in accreditation grew out of those efforts.

Together with leaderless G-zero world, the main powers of world economic activity and the industrial structure is being rapidly changed and reorganized. The engineering education also has to position in this world changing to improve the nation′s competitiveness in global market. Anytime-anywhere mobile internet accessibility has made the private ownership of knowledge change to the good of the common people. Thus, the education of engineering, which creates values and goods from the knowledge and technology, focuses on glowing global leading engineers who can make the creative knowledge production by reorganizing existing units. For the vigorous interchanges of knowledge, the construction of open-source based on open-platform is essentially demanded. South Korea’ s National Statistics Office found that about 99% of Koreans expect to have a higher degree than Associate. This high demand for tertiary education has been a driving force nurturing Korean engineering education in both a quantitative and qualitative way. However, relevant statistics indicate that the change in educational circumstances-such as the reorganization of the industrial structure, the advent of new technologies, and the expectation of the population decreasing-requires new strategies to strengthen and substantialize engineering education. To address the future direction of Korean engineering education, major activities of engineering bodies are investigated, namely, (1) developing specialized engineering educational programs and methods, (2) strengthening academic-industrial cooperation, and (3) improving the education evaluation system and administrative system. The current Korean government’ s objective in higher education can be simplified in three aspects: (1) to reinforce educational competitiveness, (2) to raise the autonomy of education institutions, and (3) to nurture research competencies. As for educational institutions, three aspects of their efforts and achievements to develop customized engineering education systems reflecting regional characteristics will be presented in three aspects: educational program, teaching method, and education evaluations. Additionally, activities of the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea to ensure the quality of education programs will be described. At last, the Korean Society for Engineering Education is introduced to emphasize its role in improving and maintaining the engineering educational system.

To assist students in becoming highly skilled and innovative engineers and to highlight the importance of technology, Muroran Institute of Technology, Japan, established Manufacturing and Engineering Design Center (known as cremo) in 2006 and has operated it since. Cremo’ s three groups have concentrated on manufacturing and engineering design (monozukuri in Japanese) : the education support group, the fundamental manufacturing research group, and the regional cooperation group. The first group provides educational support for practical training classes on and off campus, technical support for pursuing student projects and producing experimental apparatus, technical manuals describing how to use and how to make things, and PDCA-conscious engineering design education related to monozukuri. The second group supports promotion of the fundamental studies on monozukuri. The third group coordinates activities in cooperation with elementary, junior high, and high schools, bureaus, and industries, especially those in and around Muroran City, which include hands-on classes for pupils and children, workshops for visiting international students, and open seminars for local residents. The center comprehensively provides opportunities for the continuing advancement of the technical skills and strengthens regional cooperation and collaboration. This paper presents a description of activities and a summary of the achievements of the center.

The aviation industry, which is faced with a fierce global competition, is expected to become one of the major industries in Japan. Thus, students who major in aeronautics are required to obtain not only a wide range of knowledge but also practical skills in order to play an active role in the aviation segments. To this end, Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics of the University of Tokyo started a new program that introduced a business simulation and the negotiation theory to aeronautics education. This paper discusses the details of the program, its purpose and results, as well as the future works.

For creative learning, we have developed a library that allows you to easily develop a three-dimensional computer graphics game. Our library is based on the 3D animation library MMDX, which is able to use motion data and models for the free software MikuMikuDance. Our library provides easy access to a collision detection function and an object motion control function, allowing beginners to easily develop a 3D game. This paper presents the features of the library and the result of a practical training in which the library was used. 73 participants chose the practical training with the library, while 4 participants chose an ordinary training. This fact shows that the practical training with the library significantly stimulated the interest of the participants. This library is an open source piece of software and available at our download site.

This paper describes evaluation and verification of a creative practice with new library that allows a very easy creation of three dimensional computer graphics games. This paper showed the result of the evaluation of the questionnaire survey and also showed the result of factor analysis on the questionnaire. The remarkable effectiveness of the creative learning making use of the proposed library is emphasized in this paper. The number of significantly effective questionnaire items is 98 and the number of questionnaire items in adverse effect is one (95% confidence interval) . Appropriate hints and new guidelines are described in regard to use of the library for creative learning. The result of factor analysis proved the fact that the training which uses the library in order to maintain the stimulus for creative learning is effective.

Freshmen learn a lot of important formula and theorems in fluid dynamics. It is often observed that their understanding and application of those in conventional lecture are unsatisfied. In order to overcome such undesirable situation, many experiments related to fluid-dynamics contents were demonstrated intending promotion of understanding on the formula and theorems lectured. The present paper introduces a few contents of the lecture and reports the results of questionnaire filled out at the end of the lecture.

In recently years, Kosen colleges have been started to address the cooperative educations that are mainly formed by introducing industrial engineers into practical subjects in curricula. But, a new cooperative education has been conducted at Anan college of technology in Japan since 2007, and that consists of the practical work programs at manufacturing industries to enhance communication skill and work ability before graduation by iterative work. The new cooperative education succeeded in enhancing work ability by return ability evaluation to the first-third coop students. And the coop students acquired to problem-solving skill by addressing the practical design projects as graduation work. The results of questionnaire surveys for coop students are follows ; it was necessary for each student to design optimum work program to enhance work ability furthermore, and to reinforce the cooperation between faculty and industrial engineer to achieve concrete results in the practical design projects.

This paper describes an education support system for mechatronics using augmented reality technology. The system aims to offer useful information for learners, to support intuitive study, and to improve the efficiency of the in-depth understanding and study. The education support system was developed using augmented reality technology, which can synthesize information to the real image on real time. The system has a function to show the description and the datasheet of the focused mechatronics parts by the request from a learner. The circuit diagram overlaid on real image is provided when the learner click one of the part through the monitor display. The time efficiency of the information seeking task and improvement of the educational effect is discussed.

Japan Accreditation Board of Engineering Education states that the aim of engineering ethics education is the understanding for engineer’ s social responsibility. However, the results of the surveys about engineering ethics showed that this aim was not achieved. This main factor was that most lessons of the engineering ethics were based on the top-down method. Therefore, it was hard for students to understand this intended aim. In this paper, we designed and performed the lesson based on the enlightened theory of group education. Students produced some products that the residents around the school may use. The student and the resident discussed about the safety use of this product together. When the questionnaire was executed after the lesson, it was confirmed that the student understood for the society’ s responsibility, and was shown that it was effective the proposal lesson recognizes the society’ s responsibility in engineering.

In this paper, we describe a method for extracting evaluations and desires from the free-description results of a survey. For this purpose, we employ a text-mining system and a questionnaire, and we present the extraction results. Using a questionnaire, we conduct a web-based survey after each session of computer programming class, in order to enhance the effectiveness of the next session. Free-description observations are important for extracting the students’ desires. However, reading the free-description responses requires considerable time. Moreover, computer-based analysis of these responses is difficult. Therefore, we propose a text- mining system based on natural language processing, which enables us to automatically classify sentences for class evaluation and for the determination of student motivation and opinions. The proposed system facilitates our understanding of students’ evaluations and desires ; such information can enable us to conduct classes more effectively.

In 2010, Kanagawa Institute of Technology started the Aerospace Course in the department of the mechanical engineering. In this course, the flight simulator is used not only for the pilot training but also for the purpose of supporting the understanding of the flight dynamics. In this study, a stereoscopic flight simulator which assists the learning of flight dynamics was developed. The educational effectiveness of the flight simulator was examined by questionnaire. The analysis of questionnaire showed that the stereoscopic flight simulator was not so effective for the understandings of the flight dynamics, but showed that the flight simulator raised the learning morale of the flight dynamics.

Although difference of the scholastic ability expands in the secondary education, the guaranty of academic attainments of students is required at higher education institutions in these days. In addition, the career education and the professional ability education ; nurturing creativity, team working, etc., come to be demanded at the universities. To deal with these problems, a hypothesis can be suggested ; students improve their academic attainments by teaching each other. To develop this idea, Mutual Leaning System (MLS) and Teaching Materials Development (TMD) are introduced into our college. In those activities, MLS and TMD are introduced to students’ activities on basic subjects, graduation research and so on. The purpose of this paper is to present activities of MLS and TMD, and evaluation of those activities by judges in the contest.

For our fruitful future, education of able talented students is necessary. Students are expected to learn and act actively with producing the brightness in creativity to solve the subjects. The active learning education is called enhanced type education. We achieved the enhanced type Science Partnership Project (SPP) more practically based on investigation and analysis of the present cooperation between university and senior high school. In this paper, we summarized the results of SPP that was carried out with the topic of robotics in last three years. Furthermore, we introduce new education program called “Robot technology development program to assist reconstruction of earthquake damaged area by industrial high school students” which will be carried out this year.

To specify the actualities and problems on career formation of female engineers in an automobile associated industry, we compared the engineers and the other staff on the questionnaire for female employee in one company. The result of questionnaire confirms that the female engineers satisfied in-company systems for career formation, but that they don’ t satisfy the balance of work and family life, consciousness reform of the boss and herself and the communication between the female engineers.

This paper describes the use of engineering technique to improve archery competence. There is a movement of the shooting form to have a big influence on a score for archery. For archery, in order to obtain a high score, the reproducibility of shooting form is required. Stabilization of the shooting form is usually accomplished by repeated practices of the instruction of the coach. However, it is unusual to see a special coach in high school extracurricular activities. In the present study, the electronic devices that used a physical computing were made for the guidance of the form, and the effectiveness was confirmed. With these devices, the ability of archery can be improved even under the circumstances where a coach doesn’ t exist.

Study activities have been investigated in the supplement class of full e-learning for high school students before entering Chitose Institute of Science and Technology. It turns out that the activities are well characterized by the total learning time. We also find students, who attended to study in the supplement class, tend to have good results of the first year education in the institute. We discuss the implication of the present finding.

Kagoshima Prefecture has so many solitary islands and small-scale schools, which are short of teachers in charge of handicraft and poor in educational equipment. That means there are very few opportunities for the primary school children to experience handicraft. The author tried giving them such opportunities so that they would be interested in handicraft and develop their creativity. Moreover, the effects of the handicraft through the cooperation and the study of the robots contributing to human society on their career education promotion were investigated. As a result, the children not only got impressed with handicraft but also interested in the occupations and eager for learning. They came to work independently, responsively, cooperatively and decisively.

At Kanazawa Institute of Technology students are assigned a fundamental lab course for creative activity in the first and second years to become valuable engineers in business. This lab course is a compulsory subject for learning ploblem solving methods. There were problems in the fundamental lab course where creative activity has been difficult to understand for the students in the first year and that new teachers have not had a means to get background knowledge about experimental methods over broad areas of natural science. Therefore we have put frequently used items into databeses of the employed themes, principles and laws, and experimental methods. The detabases of employed themes and experimental methods have classified the items into 24 technical fields. And we have made an explanatory document for the above items with two pages per item.

The Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant accident revealed serious problems with Japanese information communication systems. From a rhetorical viewpoint, the Japanese language starts to explain a situation from the beginning and leaves the outcome until the end. In traditional Japanese culture, the world is thought to move with the collective flow of nature, and all things are constantly in the process of change. Thus, self-assertion is not encouraged in Japan. The Japanese language itself is imbued with “vagueness,” possessing a wealth of vocabulary and expressions but often not being conducive to sending out a clear message. Unfortunately, under emergency circumstances, such as experienced in March 2011, serious problems can occur. In this paper, we examine the language used by researchers in science and engineering, where clarity is essential. We prepared the Japanese-English Corpus of Presentations in Science and Engineering (JECPRESE) of transcriptions of presentations given in Japanese and English by researchers. Our comparative analyses revealed that the “vagueness” in Japanese results from missing subjects and a lack of sensitivity for paragraph structure (idea frameworks), verb tense and mood. In order to send out a clear message, more effort needs to be made to be aware of the audience’ s viewpoint. Only in this way can the Japanese learn to speak out without “vagueness” as the world accelerates towards internationalization with the ever increasing need to send out clear messages.

A programming ability has been required in many areas because of the progress of information technology. As a result, a programming education is becoming more important than ever before. However, there is an issue that programming exercises do not work effectively when they are introduced to entry level students. The introduction of programing education should be more attractive so that students can become interested in programming and engage in it independently. In this report, we suggest a method of small-step exercises in order to provide a learning environment in such a way that students work on exercises independently as well as actively. The questionnaire survey shows the method we implemented is very effective.
