    The digital transformation of society and universities has been accelerating in the COVID-19 pandemic. The digital transformation of education will advance beyond distance and time by utilizing digital technology and develop international and industry-university collaboration. The Japanese Society for Engineering Education initiated a survey and research committee in April 2021. First, the direction of the digital transformation of engineering education will be presented through a multifaceted survey of social needs, information technology, international collaboration, and industry-academia-government collaboration. Secondly, as an advanced model, the realization of graduate and recurrent education in international inter-university and industry-academia collaboration is investigated. This paper is an interim report.

    There is a need to develop human resources to create innovations and solve social issues such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Global Project Based Learning (PBL) is an educational activity in which diverse students from various countries collaborate to solve problems and create new values across disciplines. In the 2020-2021 academic year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, universities have switched from in-person to online implementation of global PBL. This paper provides an overview of global PBL and its human resource development goals, followed by an analysis of online implementation, and finally, blended international cooperative learning as a future global PBL.

    In this study, we carried out an online survey of 225 faculty members of various higher education institutions across Japan to know how active learning courses were implemented and operated during the academic year (AY) 2020-2021. The result of the survey showed that (1) implementation and operation of active learning courses are done differently in each academic discipline, (2) overall situation during AY 2020-2021 is returning to its original state prior to the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, and (3) most respondents suggested that 30%-50% of a single class can be done online. Additionally, there have been many cases reported where active learning courses were not implemented, operated, and managed because of the pandemic. It has also been found that teachers had difficulties in managing and grading the active learning courses themselves.

    Universities are required to educate in collaboration with high school education. At Hachinohe Institute of Technology, we conducted “problem research” with Hachinohe Institute of Technology Daiichi High School and university students, avoiding the crowds for preventing the COVID-19. Although remote devices are used under New Normal, it was shown that the satisfaction level of high school students can be improved by taking multiple methods such as activating communication between teachers-university students-high school students and utilizing audiovisual media. It is expected that university students will be able to establish their knowledge, and high school students will be motivated by making their image more concrete in the next few years.

    The Faculty of Science and Technology at Gunma University initiated an employability scheme for its first-year students in 2010. A new course, Career Design was established with the purpose of enhancing students’ collaborative skills. Due to anti-virus measures against the global pandemic of COVID-19, online classes were introduced in many universities. This study reports on a trial of group work activities conducted online. A tool in a collaborative workspace was employed. Preliminary results suggest the tool is effective for online group work based on the analysis of student responses. Data from the 2020 online class were compared to responses from conventional classes before 2020. It was found that there were no significant differences in questionnaire results between conventional and online classes. However, some challenges were revealed such as the neediness for more ingenuity in online education methods to enhance communication between students.

    We introduced a web system for practice problems which provided immediate feedback into remote class and found the following things. The average score of the midterm exam was significantly higher than that of previous year. When we continued to deliver the contents of remote class in face-to-face class which was gradually restarted after the midterm exam, average score of the final exam in “the standard class” (“the basic class”) was higher (significantly lower) than that of previous year. According to surveys of questionnaire, the demerit we assumed when building the remote class was not off-target and our web system for practice problems and remote class got considerable support from the students.

    The purpose of this study is to consider the method and results of industry-academia collaboration in developing an online internship program for university students to propose solutions to architectural design problems for low- and middle-income groups in emerging countries. It is confirmed that by sharing the objectives and methods between faculty members and intermediaries, even in online-only training, students are interested in architectural issues in emerging countries and can carry out the design proposals required by local social entrepreneurs. It was also found that students have realized the improvement of various abilities and skills through this design proposal process.

    In an online video lecture using fill-in-the-blank slides, students were required to take notes based on date, the number of class session, student number, name, blank numbers and corresponding answers in the slides for the confirmation of their video viewing. After the lecture, each student took pictures of note records using a scanning application and submitted them as a pdf file to the course instructor. When more informative and/or well-organized records, standard records and records containing deficiencies or errors were graded A, B and C, respectively, students who each submitted the A-graded record had significantly higher scores in their academic performance, the percentage of correct answers on the unit test and subject exam, GPA and the number of credits earned in the previous and implementation years. This tendency was especially pronounced for the male students, while there was no correlation for the female students.

    In order to construct effective writing support methods, we attempted to visualize the language sense in written language. First, by analyzing readers’ comments on sample sentences, we were able to extract “sentence arrangement,” “word meaning,” “context,” and “word arrangement” as elements of the sense of “appropriateness” of language. Next, we developed the tool to visualize the tendency of readers to distinguish between opinions and facts, and confirmed the effectiveness of the tool. Finally, by analyzing the tendency of multiple people’ s corrections to the sample sentences, we were able to show the possibility of reflecting their sense of the appropriateness of the language.

    The Robocon 2020 was the first to be held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since it limited the production time and the production environment, it became essential to respond differently from the conventional competition. In addition, it was necessary to consider the prevention of transmission of the COVID-19 and the safety of robot development. To overcome these problems, we focused on hybrid home and school activities, and maximized the use of equipment such as 3D printers. This paper introduces the activities and results of the Robocon 2020 of Yonago KOSEN.

    Hokkaido University of Science has been doing English learning support program in the term of remedial education, for freshmen who have difficulties in English. However, under the situation of COVID-19, this program should be held online. The aim of this paper is to report what and how has been done in the online support. Firstly, the authors give an overview about some previous reports on this program. Secondly, who used the program and what was carried out are detailed. Lastly, reflections and problems are discussed. This paper suggests that participants who join this program tend to get higher scores on the terminal English tests, at the same time it is difficult to let the students join the online program.

    Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, it became difficult to conduct face-to-face lessons, and distance lessons and “hybrid lessons” that combined remote and face-to-face lessons were introduced. These methods are different from conventional face-to-face lessons, and have advantages and disadvantages. This paper reports on the evaluation results of hybrid lessons in programming exercises at Muroran Institute of Technology. In programming exercises, it is considered that the effect of individual correspondence by pre-learning (flip teaching) and breakout room at the time of distance learning is high. The results obtained in this study is useful as a new lesson format in the post-corona era.

    Under the influence of the new corona infection, students were able to assemble and check the electric circuit using the purchased circuit kit in the remote experiment “electronic circuit production” . This is an experimental subject for all first-year students of the Faculty of Engineering, and an LED blinking circuit is used for introductory use of electrical and electronic circuits. And using a sensor element called CdS we add an item that changes its operation depending on the illuminance of the room. By doing so, they learned the characteristics of electronic circuits that the operation of the circuit can be changed according to the situation.

    This paper reports a virtual reality (VR) video production project conducted in a digital contents production course. The project is notable in that it is a real client project requested by a local government. The project objective is to product VR video contents for awareness-raising activities of barrier-free mindset. In this paper, we show the project summary and the VR video contents as the result in this project. We also report the evaluation of our VR video contents in the project. By this evaluation, we found that VR video contents can be effective media for awareness-raising activities of barrier-free mindset.
