For promoting mobility of engineers across borders, there must be frameworks to recognize the equivalence of engineering education and professional registration. The first gate to the mutual recognition is to share common concepts on the relevant matters. In Japan, the image of engineers is almost equivalent to that of engineering practitioners in general. What we have to do first is to revise the public concept of engineers so that the gap between ours and global ones diminishes. International Engineering Meeting has been discussing problems of education and registration and proposed global standards that would be included in the rules and procedures. Concepts and understandings behind the proposal are compared with ours and the measures for improving our global compatibility are discussed.

In order to facilitate students to understand learning materials more deeply, it is important for them to consider actively and construct their knowledge by themselves. In this study, we designed and executed a class based on the concept of the Collaborative Note-taking Activity so that students can learn actively and understand learning materials more deeply. The 79 students that participated in the class were divided into 29 groups. Each group made four collaborative notes. Most of them could extract keywords from learning materials, visualize structures of the keywords to make their relationships clear, and make adequate collaborative notes. As a result of questionnaire, most students proved to have found the meaning of the Collaborative Note-taking Activity.

We developed new bio-medical engineering curriculum for industrial engineers, and we confirmed that the engineer's needs and the educative effects by holding a trail program. This study in Tohoku University was supported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) . We named the curriculum as “ESTEEM” which is acronym of project title “Education through the Synergetic Training for the Engineering Enhanced Medicine” . In Tohoku University, the “REDEEM” curriculum which is an entry level course of bio-medical engineering for engineers has been already held. The positioning of “ESTEEM” program is an advanced course to enhance knowledge and experience in clinical point of view. The program is consisted of the problem based learning (PBL) style lectures, practical training, and observation learning in hospital. It is a unique opportunity to have instruction by doctors, from diagnosis to surgical operation, from traditional technique to front-line medical equipment. In this paper, we report and discuss on the progress of the new bio-medical engineering curriculum.

Recently, the engineering ethics education is paid attention and thought important among engineering education. On the other hand, in carrying out the engineering ethics education, we need to grasp precisely the consciousness of the students who receive education. Accordingly, we maid an attitude survey by using several questionnaires. The questionnaires were based on the events regarding the engineering ethics that occurred actually in the past or was carried out. We divide the consciousness of the students into general ethics and engineering ethics on the basis of the result and analysis of the questionnaires. This study reports the result.

For an organic and polymer chemistry experiment for students in university and college of technology, synthesis of conducting polymers was attempted. Three conductive polymers, polyaniline, poly (o-phenylenediamine) and poly (N-methylaniline) , were prepared by oxidative polymerizations of the corresponding monomers. Among four oxidizing agents, K2Cr2O7, KIO3, FeCl3 and (NH4) 2S2O8, (NH4) 2S2O8 was turned out to be the best oxidizing agent for the polymerizations. The polymerizing solutions gradually colored because of the formation of colored oligomers, which was monitored with the absorption spectra measured during the polymerizations. Since the time for experiment was limited, the molar ratio of [ (NH4) 2S2O8] to [monomer] was taken 2 : 1. The experiment was demonstrated in the organic and polymer chemistry experiments and was evaluated by students as well as teachers.

In this research, the degree of similarity between reports is calculated by the one pair comparison method and the TF·IDF method, the z-scores are calculated by all words and some keywords in a report. The training data for the neural network is made by these values, and the automatic grading support system, which evaluates reports in 5 steps, has been developed. The reports of the C programming exercises submitted by e-mail could predict the score within an error of 10% by using this system, compared to manual operation. Furthermore, the office hours of 3 TAs could be reduced to 0, and contributed to improving the quality of writing reports for the students.

We constructed a lecturing system for multimedia teaching materials, that can model and visualize acoustic phenomena. These teaching materials facilitate student learning via high density lectures, thus enabling higher motivation and understanding levels. We published these teaching materials as e-Learning materials on a LMS (Learning Management System) . It was clarified that these teaching / learning materials are highly effective for acoustic education. These materials are continuously improved through cooperation with other educational institutions, both domestic and international. We are currently distributing these materials and providing instruction in their operating and constructing methodology in IT multimedia workshops. Here, we report on the deployment situation of multimedia teaching materials for modeling and visualizing acoustic phenomena.

Students in the faculty of engineering generally have to study basic subjects such as mathematics and physics. The basic subjects are required in preparation for specialized subjects in the senior grades. However, it is not easy for many students to keep their motivations during the long preparatory period. Therefore, the Department of System Robotics at Toyo University provides students with a series of project based learning (PBL) classes in order to motivate them to study the specialized subjects. We continuously offer the PBL classes for two-and-a-half years until students begin to research for their undergraduate theses. In this paper, the method of our PBL program is shown and its effects on activeness, cooperation and motives of students are discussed based on the results of a questionnaire.
