In Academic Year 2006, Hiroshima University launched an educational program in order to provide each student with detailed learning support, thereby improving the quality of education and meeting society’ s expectations on the university. This program is called HiPROSPECTS® (Hiroshima University Program of Specified Education and Study) . HiPROSPECTS® is constructed to aim at competency-based education. Therefore, one outstanding feature of HiPROSPECTS® is a new evaluation method using rubric in order to measure competences in each major programs. In addition to conventional evaluation of performances in individual lectures, the University informs students of their achievement of the objectives for individual major programs. Students are expected to achieve the objectives by the time of their graduation. Knowing their achievement levels help students to continue their studies effectively. At the end of each semester, the University evaluates students’ achievement of objectives for individual major programs, stipulated in the Guidebook of programs as rubrics, in the following four levels: Best (B) , Modal (M) , threshold (T) , and Unsatisfactory (N) . Implementation of PDCA cycle is essential for teaching and learning assessment. HiPROSPECTS® secures quality of graduates by implementing PDCA cycle and aims to construct high reliable curriculum. From 2015 HiPROSPECTS® will start as the improved system.

This paper proposes how to accelerate the cultivation of human resources as well as an ideal type of the engineers needed for present-day Japanese Monozukuri. Japanese society is faced with the countermeasures against the rapid aging and falling birthrate. The field of Japanese Monozukuri is also the same. This paper firstly defines the competences required for engineers and secondly tries to generalize the process of learning technology on the basis of a standardized learning curve.

In Japanese university classes, lectures are the most popular styles, while their educational effects have never been investigated up until now. Here in the paper, the quantitative evaluation of the students’ attitude toward the class was investigated through the introduction of The Class Respondence Rate (CRR) system, in order to clarify the problems of lectures and lecturers’ efforts to improve their classes. CRR is a ratio of students’ respondence toward the class management. In the faculty of science and engineering of Setsunan University, our investigation on the CRR results for the lectures showed the lower score, but when some exercises or quizes were given, the CRR score increased drastically. Therefore, we conclude the CRR score can be utilized for the improvement of the class management in terms of its quantitative evaluation of students’ reaction toward the class.

Engineering Design is one of key courses for students to develop their problem solving skills. Design Project I is such a course to study the fundamentals of engineering design process through project-based learning. Students are divided into some groups and each group develops the idea for the problems, and finally presents the result and summarizes in the report. We aimed the improvement of report writing and presentation skills by means of mutual evaluations among students. In this paper, the effect of the two approaches is discussed.

One important subject in basic drafting class is ensuring that the students understand drafting rules based on Japanese industrial standards. Recently, instead of hand drafting, 2D or 3D CAD has been introduced to drafting practice classes in engineering education. However, there are few reports on CAD’ s educational effects. Thus, to compare the efficacy of CAD and hand drawing, we tested two groups of students who took 2D CAD and hand drafting, respectively. First, three question forms were compared on the required time to answer; then, the judgment of understanding and mistake-searching tests were conducted. The results showed a significant difference between the two classes in the percentage of correct answers on some questionnaire items. The lecture in which the percentage of correct answers was low was improved, such that it might explain the benefit of using concrete figures. After implementing improvements in teaching methods, the final examination showed significant educational effect.

We introduced project management education integrating leadership education using simulator and Project Based Learning (PBL) in engineering graduate school. Many simulated experiences allow the students to imagine actual manners to take leadership. The students apply pseudo experience by using simulator to the PBL. It is highly effective to apply conscious leadership to a project. Because, there are many opportunities in order for students to do leadership actions in PBL, enabling them to accelerate the growth of leadership. A 360-degree assessment was carried out before and after the course. In another six months after the course, we conducted follow-up interviews and Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EQ) assessment. As joint result of simulator and PBL, we made sure that the students developed their leadership actions in a real world.

Komatsu College has been engaged in the development of an engineering education program through the collaboration between the college and a manufacturing company group. Both parties intend to form industrial engineers who are in short supply by making best use of their respective strengths. Specifically, under this collaborative education program, liberal arts are taught by the college faculty while specialized subjects are instructed by the group staff, which leads to effective education. However, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of this program precisely, it is essential to have feedbacks from the students. In this article, we have taken a survey of the students and graduates of the program to find out the relevance between the subjects offered and their current job responsibilities. We have also asked same questions to their supervisors and compared the responses of both groups. The comparison shows similar opinions and different perspectives between the two, which indicates the necessity to review the current curriculum.
