The material consisted of 2149 dentures, fitted at Tokyo Medical and Dental University. Clinical examinations were performed at the time when the dentures were inserted. And six months to five and a half years thereafter the whole cases were recalled for reexamination. This report presents the results and analyses on the mobility of abutment teeth. The following results were obtained:
1. On 415 of 1739 abutment teeth (23.9%) the mobility increased in the follow-up period. On 997 (57.3%), however, it showed no change, and on 327 (18.8%) it decreased.
2. The rate of the mobile abutment teeth was remarkably higher in the advanced age denture-wearers than in the early age.
3. In the denture-wearers cleaning insufficiently their mouths and dentures the mobility of the abutment teeth increased more frequently than in those cleaning sufficiently.
4. The mobility of the abutment teeth increased much more frequently in the unstable dentures than in the stable dentures.
5. The examined dentures comprised the dentures made of one-piece cast metal skeleton with acrylic resin saddle, and those in acrylic resin with clasps and bars in wought metal. The rate of the mobile abutment teeth was significantly higher in the latter than in the former.
6. The rate of the mobile abutment teeth increased with the decrease of remaining teeth.
