In order to epidemiological investigation of TMJ disorder, 2300 employees in an inderstry at Nagasaki district were investigated by a questionnaire. The results obtained of 2183 valid contributors were as follows:
1. Of the valid contributors, frequencies of complaints of sound, pain and limitation, which were typical symptoms of TMJ disorder, were 18.2, 17.2 and 6.8%, respectively. And 22.2% of them complained one symptom, 8.8% complained more than two complex symptoms.
2. No significant deference was found in these TMJ disorder-like symptoms in terms of age and sex distributions (P>0.1).
3. The association between the wearness of a removable denture and TMJ disorder-like symptoms was not significant (P>0.1).
4. The associations between complaints of headache, of stiff shoulder, of bruxism and TMJ disorder-like symptoms were 0.14 (P<0.001), 0.13 (P<0.001) and 0.07 (P<0.005), respectively. The more complicated the symptoms of TMJ disorder was, the higher the frequency of these complaints was (P<0.001).
5. The results suggested that the further extention of the sample should be necessary to investigate the etiology of TMJ disorder.
