    Fracture of acrylic resin teeth, especially those of anterior teeth from a maxillary denture, are not uncommon, although they unite chemically with denture base resin.
    The purpose of the present investigation was to analyse the causes of fracture in acrylic resin anterior teeth by utilizing a two-dimensional finite element method and to find a better method would prevent the fracture of acrylic resin anterior teeth.
    The following conclusion was noted:
    1. Ridge laps and necks of the teeth, at which the fracture are caused most frequently, tend to sustain the higher concentration of the tensile stress when the forces applied onto from the horizontal direction were the incisal edge of the acrylic resin teeth.
    2. The concentration of the tensile stress in the acrylic resin teeth with a S-pad, at which a part of the denture base allowed to partially extend onto the cingulum of the resin teeth, could be reduced in the ridge lap surface between the teeth and the denture base.

    A temporal change of spectral reflectance for three new soft lining materials was discussed. These materials, Polyolefin, Silicone resilient materials and Polyphosphazine fluoroelastomer were immersed in four aqueous solutions and one oleaginous solution. A remarkable change was observed in the Polyolefin immersed in olive oil plus β-Carotene, and also in Silicone in turmeric and instant coffee. Polyphosphazine fluoroelastomer in turmeric and in instant coffee also caused a noticeable temporal change of spectral reflectance. These results suggested that the use of spectral reflectance was very useful for comparing with before and after evaluation for color change.

    This experiment was designed to discuss the influence of the retainer design on the adhesive strength of an anterior resin-bonded bridge in further detail, following our previous report. Two kinds of dental alloy were used and ten kinds of retainer design for each alloy were examined. Peeling load to distal incisal side was added to the retainers cemented on the upper canine-shaped abutments of Ni-Cr alloy with Panavia EX (R) through a L-shaped handle, and the fracture strengths of the retainers were measured.
    The conclusions are:
    1. The fracture strength of the design covering both lingual and missing-side proximal surface of the abutment was greater than that of the retainer covered only lingual surface.
    2. The preparation of a channel on the missing-side proximal surface markedly contributed to increasing the fracture strength.
    3. The increase of the channel depth on the missing-side proximal surface from 0.5mm to 1.0mm was not effective to improve the fracture strength.
    4. Another channel preparation on the non-missing side proximal surface as well as on the missing-side was not contributable to increase the fracture strength.
    5. The fracture strength of the micro-beaded retainer was comparable to that of the retainer with a channel on the missing-side proximal surface.
    6. The fracture strengths of Maxgold® and Albabond E® were approximately the same in all retainer designs.

    The object of this study is to do statistical analysis of 283 TMJ patients data which were collected from eight universities in Japan.
    The results were as follows.
    1. The patients were 59 males and 224 females. The mean age was 37.4 years.
    2. Pain on palpation was present in 88.3% of patients and the TMJ itself showed the highest incidence (54.4%).
    3. Joint noises were present in 66.5% and clicking was present in 51.8%.
    4. Fifty-four percent of patients had maximum opening of less than 40mm and 18.9% of patients had maximum lateral deviation of more than 4mm in opening and closing.
    5. It was recognized that the incidence of each symptoms which had been reported by many researchers in the past was different in some degree, and some factors caused these variations may be perhaps existed in our study.

    This study is for examining the difference between a normal occlusion and experimental premature contacts (30 and 60μm) existing the lower first molar in the masticatory path using a covariance analysis.
    1. No significant difference was found in the opening phase, and a significant difference was found in the closing phase between the natural and exist experimental premature contacts.
    2. There were significant differences between 30 and 60μm in the path.

    The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prosthodontic usefulness of laser doppler flowmetric (LDF) measurement of the blood flows in gingival and palatal mucosae and skins overlying the masseter muscle and temporomandibular joint.
    High reproducibility was obtained in the LDF measurement of the blood flows at these sites.
    The gingival mucosal blood flow (GBF) was increased by application of a cold or hot stimulus and decreased by clenching. It was also decreased by experimentally produced gingivitis. GBF was found to be correlated to the volume of gingival groove fluid which was measured simultaneously.
    The palatal mucosal blood flow (PBF) was increased transiently by application of a cold or hot stimulus and decreased by impression. It was also decreased by attachment of an experimental palatal plate.
    The skin blood flow over the masseter muscle (MBF) was increased by clenching. No significant change was observed in MBF by chewing of gum. The skin blood flow over the temporomandibular joint (TBF) underwent no change by irradiation of soft laser beam or application of a topical antiinflammatory agent. Both MBF and TBF were decreased by pulsing from a myomonitor.
    These results suggested that LDF is useful in the field of prosthodontics as a method for measurement of blood flows.

    This study provides the three-dimensional analyzing system of occlusal tooth contacts.
    The three-dimensional measurement of tooth surface was done by using the three-dimensional contact digitizer with a touch sensor probe. Tooth surfaces were digitized with 250 micrometer scanning grid.
    Jaw movement data were recorded by using the six-degree-of-freedom digital jaw movement tracking device (MM-JI).
    The three-dimensional morphology measurements of tooth surfaces were coupled with the jaw movement data and visualized on the graphic terminal.
    When the distance between the upper and lower occlusal facets was less than 200 micrometer, the reference point of measurements was set at the tooth contact site. Occlusal contacts at any jaw position in functional movements can be visualized on the graphic terminal.
    This system will be very useful for analysis of relationships between occlusal surface and jaw movement.

    We reported previously that the main dissolved element of Adlloy-OH in saline was gallium and had a slightly cytotoxic effect. In the present paper a cytotoxic effect of Adlloy-OH which was applied to a metal surface was investigated by the millipore filter method (Wennberg, A., 1979).
    Adlloy-OH which is liquid at room temperature was applied to the surface of a pure gold disk (7mm in diameter) with a pure tin bar. Surplus liquid alloy on the metal surface was wiped off with clean paper tissue. Metal disks to which Adlloy-OH was applied were used to the cytotoxicity test.
    A cell monolayer was established on a millipore filter which was placed on agar medium, cell side down. Test specimens were placed on top of millipore filter. The culture dish wasincubated for 2 hours at 37°C in a humidified atmosphere of 5 per cent CO2 in air. The cell reaction was assessed by incubating the cells, still adherent to the filter, for the demonstration of succinate dehydrogenase activity. The filters were examined macroscopically and scores from 0 to 3 were given to grade the severity of the cell responce.
    Adlloy-OH which was applied to the metal surface showed no toxic effect on the cells as a result.

    The present study was made not only to spectro-analyze the fluctuation of the tapping rhythm in subjects with normal masticatory function and to examine its overlapping with 1/f fluctuation as vital responsibility, but also to observe the influence of an experimental object intervened on the occlusal surface.
    As a result, normal subjects showed 1/f spectrum at each subject's proper rhythm, but not 1/f at a metronome-loading rhythm. In case of an object intervened at proper rhythm, the thickness of the object (100, 400μm) was suggested to make change in spectrum.

    This study was made for the purpose of seeking the effective condition to induce the mouth opening of jaw opening reflex. The following results were obtained.
    1. It has been found that clenching is an essential factor for the induction of mouth opening as jaw opening reflex.
    2. Relation between stimulus intensity and digastric muscle activity, more than 4mA, 75% mvc showed the greatest, the second in 50% mvc and the third is 25% mvc.
    3. Relation between stimulus intensity and the ratio of masseter muscle activity before stimulation to after, at 6mA and 7mA, 50% mvc showed the smallest, the second is 75% mvc and the third is 25% mvc.
    4. Relation between stimulus intensity and the ratio of temporal muscle activity before stimulation to after, more than 6 mA, 50% mvc showed the smallest, the second is 75% mvc and the third is 25% mvc.
    5. Relation between stimulus intensity and degree of mouth opening, at 6mA and 7mA, 50% mvc showed the greatest, the second is 75% mvc and the third is 25% mvc.
    6. It has been suggested that 50% mvc at 6mA and 7mA is the effective condition for inducing the degree of mouth opening (from 2.23 to 2.69mm) which can be judged as normal range.

    To study the function of the superior head of the human lateral pterygoid muscle (SLpt) we have divised an inserting method with resin splint. The method is based on the anatomical mean value. The aim of this study was to explain and discuss the method.
    Using this method we have recorded EMGs of SLpt 40 times in 29 subjects.
    The results were as follows:
    1. Accidents like hematoma or bleeding didn't occur.
    2. 90% of subjects could be placed EMG electrodes correctly only once.
    3. We could easily record reproducible EMG of SLpt.
    From these findings it is suggested that this method is usefull to investigate the fundamental property of SLpt and to diagnose the patients with craniomandibular dysfunction.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional property of the inferior head of lateral pterygoid muscle (ILP) in jaw movements. Electromyographic recordings (EMG) of bilateral ILP were obtained intraorally by using bipolar fine wire electrodes. In addition, surface electrodes were used on the posterior temporal muscles and the other 4 muscles. Jaw movement data were taken by the 6 degree of freedom digital jaw tracking device (MM-JI). Both EMG and jaw movement were recorded simultaneously in 8 subjects. The results were as follows.
    1. Strong correlations existed between the activity of ILP and both distance and velocity of condylar translation during opening, protrusion and lateral movement in the contralateral direction.
    2. During the slowest opening movement of mandible, the onset of ILP activity often occurred after the beginning of the forward translation of the condyle.
    3. Restriction of the lateral border movement was due to earlier activity of the ipsilateral ILP and decreased activity of the ipsilateral posterior temporal muscle.
    4. The relationships among the activity of ILP, chewing path and condylar movement during mastication were elucidated.

    A new simple modification method for adherend metals surface by using liquid Ga-Sn alloy (Adlloy) was investigated to applicate for the precious metal alloy denture. Surface of silver based alloy containing 12 wt% gold was modified by Adlloy and applied 4-META resin. The adhesive ability was studied by percolation tests and shearing bond strength, and compared with the results of tin electroplating method.
    The surface modification by Adlloy showed lower percolation ratio and higher shearing bond strength than tin electroplation method, suggesting that the method is effective for application to precious metal denture and would prevent percolation of salivary and food debris at the finishing line of denture.

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate various custom-made mouthguard materials. At the present time, sheet type materials and molding type materials are available ascustom-made mouthguard materials. In this paper 10 kinds of the sheet type and 4 kinds of themolding type (Molteno soft, regular, hard type and Elastomer) were tested on the reduction ofthickness and the deformation under the static loading.
    The results were as follows;
    1. The sheet type materials before forming were classified into the thin group (less than 2mm), the medium group (around 3mm) and the thick group (about 4mm). After forming, theirthickness were reduced about 20 percent.
    2. The permanent deformation was found in the thin group of the sheet type and less than3.0 mm of Molteno soft, less than 2.0mm of Molteno regular, 1.0mm of Molteno hard andElastomer under 30kgf static loading.

    In order to investigate the behavior of denture supporting tissue affected by wearing denture, we observed the change of blood flow in the mucosa under partial denture base.The experimental dentures and ones in use were loaded with various forces. The laser dopplerflowmeter (Canon Co. LC-1) was used in measuring blood flow before and under the loads.
    The results were as follows:
    1. The blood flow was generally decreased with load, but increased in some places ofresidual ridge.
    2. The blood flow varied between the places, such as crest and buccal area of ridge.
    3. The blood flow changed according to the design of occlusal rest.
    4. The blood flow affected differently by sustained and intermitted load.

    We measured three-dimensional movements of a maxillary complete denture during clenching at the centric relation in six totally edentulous patients with a newly developedmeasuring system. And we also investigated what influence a flange length concerning thedenture stability would have on the movements.
    1. When either a flange whole or just a buccal flange was shortened, horizontal movementsand rotation of the denture increased. Lack of the flange in the region of the maxillary tuberositydecreased the resistance to horizontal shifting of the denture and denture retention by cheekmuscle. These factors are considered to cause the horizontal movements of the denture duringclenching, especially in lateral directions.
    2. Both anteroposterior and up-and-down movements of the denture in the region ofincisors increased by shortening a labial flange. These movements seem to be caused by adecrease in mechanical resistance of the labial flange to the alveolar ridge and the mucobuccalfold.
    3. Anteroposterior movements of the denture were increased by shortening the palatalregion. This seems to be caused by an increase in occlusal force per unit area due to the decreasein the denture-base area and by a decrease in stiffness of the mucosa due to incomlete border seal.

    This study was conducted to select useful items manifesting the factors constructing the structure of patients' satisfaction on prosthetic treatment with removable dentures. Eachgroup of 102 complete dentures, 95 A-P dentures and 106 P dentures was analyzed. Applying tomultivariate statistical analyses, factors having similar information were extracted. The followingresults were obtained.
    1. The structure of patients' satisfaction was constructed with “denture performance factor”, “denture structure factor” and proper factors on each denture.
    2. Patients' evaluations strongly influencing these factors were “strangeness”, “tooth mold”, “chew food”, “esthetics” and “dental service” on complete dentures.
    3. On A-P dentures, “stability”, “tooth mold”, “pain”, “taste” and “dental service” were veryimportant elements.
    4. On P dentures, “stability”, “tooth mold”, “strangeness” and “pain” could well explain thesefactors.
    5. It is considered that above results would be available in quantitative evaluation of objectiveinformation obtained from the patients.

    When removing cemented posts, the application of ultrasonic vibration is effective to reduce the retentive force of the posts. However, it is not clear which frequency of vibration moreeffective is.
    In this study, zinc phosphate, polycarboxylate, glass ionomer and adhesive resin cements wereused. After cementation, three lebels of vibration 25, 30, 42 kHz were added to the for cemented post, and the retentive force of posts were measured.
    Results were as follows:
    1. When used zinc phosphate, polycarboxylate and glass ionomer cements, the retentive forceof posts decreased clearly at each frequency of vibration for 3 minutes.
    2. When used adhesive resin cement, the retentive force of posts did not decrease at eachfrequencey of vibration.
    3. When used zinc phosphate cement, there was significantly no effective frequency. However, 25 kHz in polycarboxlate cement and 42 kHz in glass ionomer cement were hotably effective.

    It is said that plastic teeth possess the ability to flex, thereby absorbing a greater amount of the masticatory impact when deflective contacts are encountered. The purpose of this study wasto investigate dynamic viscoelastic properties of artificial teeth. The test specimens were composedof artificial teeth (Livdent FB-20 teeth, lower second premolar, made from either plastic or porcelain, both by G. C. Co.) and heat-cured denture base resin. The compressive stress, strain and their phasedifference were measured directly by using the viscoelastic spectrometer of Orientec Co., Ltd. with theadoption of the forced vibration non-resonance method. The frequencies used in our experimentwere 11, 35, 110 Hz. The static compression (20.0 N) was given previously to the test specimen, and then together on this force the vibratory force (5.0, 10.0, 15.0 N) was to be put on in order tosimulate the condition in vivo.
    The results are that plastic teeth showed low modulus of elasticity, high fracture toughness andhigh shock absorbing ability compared with porcelain teeth.

    In the clinical education of prosthodontics, it is significant to teach basic prosthodontic principles with the decision making process as well as technical procedures. In this study, a computeraided consulting system for mastering denture adjustment procedures (expert system for dentureadjustments) was developed. The evaluation of the system was done in 16 dental students with thesimulated situation using color slides of a clinical denture adjustment case.
    Following results were obtained:
    1. The decision making process of denture adjustment procedures was converted into thecomputer consulting system using the production rules.
    2. The simulation using this system was proven to be effective.
    3. Students also could understand the significance of learning the decision making process indenture adjustments by this system easier than conventional text books.
  • 理論値と自動削合による実験値との比較

    In the full balanced occlusion, the inclination of protrusive occlusal facets must theoretically coincide with the direction of their protrusive movements. Actual complete dentures, however, do not always satisfy this requirement, due principally to a variety of fabrication errors. Wetherefore investigated how closely actual inclination is related to the theoretical value calculated fromthe movement.
    We made 5 complete dentures with the identical compensating curve and 5 others without it, forpurposes of comparison. Before the automatic milling-in process was undertaken, we measured themedial cusp angle on the second premolar and both molars. We then measured the inclination ofprotrusive facets on the same tooth. Results were as follows: 1) a significant difference in the cuspangle was noted between the two groups ; 2) the inclination of the facets nearly coincided with theirtheoretical values; 3) there was no significant difference in the inclination of the facets between thetwo groups.
    These results proved that the inclination theorized was valid, and that the compensating curvehad little effect on the inclination of protrusive facets obtained by the milling-in process.

    This study established a new method of quantitive analysis on the form of abutment teeth prepared with natural teeth at Random Position (R. P.) under clinical situation.
    The subjects for this study which were the maxillary first premolars on the right and left side andthe cases of indication of extruction conveniently under orthodontic treatment were evaluated.
    The preparations were the chamfer type for full cast crowns on the right side and the full-shoulder type for full-bake type porcelain fused to metal crowns on the left side.
    Further, those data were compared with the average data of ten abutment teeth prepared withmelamine-resin teeth on a mannequin by the same operator at R.P. to evaluate this new method ofanalysis.
    Those data could be compared under the same standard and the form of abutment teeth preparedwith natural teeth were similar to that with melamine-resin teeth. On the side, some factors whichwere considered to influence the teeth preparation were apparent.
    As a result, this new method could be used for analysis of the form of abutment teeth preparedwith natural teeth.

    To find the specific parameters that differentiate craniomandibular disorder patients (CMD-group) from normal subjects (normal-group), the temporal muscle and masseter muscle EMGs were measured during a sustained maximum clenching and gum-chewing period.
    In power spectral analysis of EMGs during clenching, the power increased significantly in thenormal-group than those of the CMD-group in the 0-75 Hz frequency range. Although the powerdecreased over the 200 Hz range in the normal-group, there was little change in the CMD-group.The power spectra changing patterns were classified into 4 types according to the different combinationsof the 0-75 Hz and over 200 Hz range. Twenty five out of 30 subjects in the normal-group, and9 out of 30 from the CMD-group were classified into type I which indicated an increasing lowfrequency power with a decreasing high frequency power. Normal range of the coefficient variationof cycle, duration, and duration/cycle were set at mean±3 SD of the normal-group. Twenty subjectsin the CMD-group were beyond the normal range in at least one of the three parameters. By utilizingthe combinations of the power spectra changing pattern and masticatory rhythm, 93.2% of CMD-group were found to be parafunctional.

    An impression in denture prosthodontics is the first step for the construction of complete denture. The alveolar mucosa as an impression objectives can be displaced underpressure so that method in edentulous impression taking has influenced on contour variations ofthe master cast.
    In this study, the impression pressure is devided between the seating speed and holdingpressure of the impression tray, and the three dimensions repositioner and simulation modelsupposed maxillary edentulous alveolar ridge are used for impression in the denture construction.It is investigated with three dimensional measurement of the master cast that the seating speedand holding pressure are influenced on the reproducibility of simulation model.
    As the result of this study, the following conclusion was obtained.
    1. The seating speed dose not influence contour variations of the master cast irrespectiveof pressure-displaceability of simulation model.
    2. The holding pressure influences contour variations of the master cast of the simulationmodel except the simulation model without pressure-displaceability.
    The pressure-displacement of the stopper portion and the portion close to stopper areinfluenced by holding pressure.
    Especially, the simulation model with rich pressure-displaceability raise the large amount ofpressure-displacement according to holding pressure.
