There are three methods of grinding a twist drill point in practice, i, e., to grind a normal conical surface, inverted conical one and cylindrical one. The authors have analyzed lip angles, chisel-edge angles, rake angles and clearance angles geometrically based upon the actual grinding process of these points. The object of the present research is to obtain the proper geometrical grinding conditions in order to realize the most suitable angles of the point.
The first report shows the analysis of the point ground to the normal conical surfaces.

The recent progress of telecommunication has needed overtone quartz oscillator-plates. In Japan, however, they have not been actually used till present owing to the difficulty of its mechanical work. The authors have studied on how to lap quartz plates, and at first carried out experiments of "Single" laps, which are "Free block" lap, "Cemented block" lap as well as "Vacuum chuck" lap. Then, they have succeeded in lapping oscillator-plates for Mc by two "Plane parallel" laps.
In this report, the results by "Single" laps are shown, and the conclusions are as follows :
(1) By simple "Single" laps, the overtone can not be excited,
(2) parallelism of plates thus obtained can not be under several microns,
(3) the reason is attributed to the lack of "equi-thickness-parallelism" principle.

A new flat superfinishing process which may be called a work-vibration type is designed and tested. Further, the relation between the stock removal by flat superfinishing and the operating conditions is analyzed on the assumption that the sharp or dull edges of abrasives penetrate and make minute scratches on the work. This formula led by us considerably agrees with some experimental results.
