In this experiment, a simple CA storage system with an aspirator type CO2 scruber using water was devised and the experiment was run to ascertain the capability and actuality of the system, using laboratory scale models.
Exp. 1. Respiration of agricultural products in air tight condition was decreased by the change in the air composition, gradually. The respiration rate was effected by temperature, the concentration of oxygen and their mutual action.
Exp. 2. A nomograph for CO2 gas concentration in the model CA room, was made from several rates of scrubbing CO2 by the scruber.
Exp. 3. Substituting a constant from the nomograph made in the exp. 2. to following equation, CO2 concentration in the model store room could be estimated well.
    C(t)=C0·e-at+Qrt, Qr=(22.4/44.0·qr·G)/Va
where C (t) is CO2 concentration (%, vol.) after t hrs from the start of scruber running C0 is CO2 concentration in the model room of initial (%, vol.), Qr is the respiration rate of products (%, vol.), t is time from the start of scrubbing (hrs), qr is the respiration rate (CO2mg/kg/hr), G is the weight of storage products (kg) and Va is the air space in the store room (cm3).

In order to obtain the fundamental factors necessary for designing and operating an agitating-type washing machine for carrot, some experiments were conducted according to the design of experiments using an orthogonal table of L27 (313). The main factors in this experimental plan were (1) the number of agitating rods, (2) the weight of carrots filled, (3) the number of revolutions of agitating rods and (4) the quantity of air supplied. The results obtained were as follows.
    1. Judging from the contribution ratio, the torque required to operate the washing machine almost depended upon three effects of main factors (1), (2) and (3).
    2. As the weight of carrots filled increased, the power spectrum of fluctuating torque wes inclined to move to the region of a low frequency.
    3. The quantity of bruised carrots occured during washing operation was mostly influenced by the number of revolutions of the agitating rods (C. R·68.1%). In order to lower the bruised percent to less than 2 to 3%, the number of revolutions has to be kept less than 30rpm.
    4. When a carrot was placed between the agitating rod and air supplying pipe during washing operation, the maximum torque occured to be at the order of 0.7 to 4 kg·m. The sufficient horspower required to operate the machine under the maximum load was 0.5ps.
    5. The residue of fine soil was recognized evidently on the peel of carrot excluding the condition of the number of agitating rods 13 and the number of revolutions of 70rpm. In oder to remove the fine soil by means of agitating-type washing machine, a subsidiary way such as brushing is necessary.
