    The size segregation of polydispersed particles being fed from a hopper at various heights into a container has been studied. Experiments were conducted in a small (14cm) and large (28cm) container. The outlet diameter of the hopper was also changed. Tested particles ranged from 150 to 650μm in size. The bias that arises when removing samples from inside the container, and the effect of sample size, were incorporated into the assessment of the degree of segregation.
    The particle heap was classified into upper and lower layers; the lower layer consisted of particles accumulated through repulsion against the container bottom, and the upper layer formed a slope having a constant angle of repose. It was found that, in the lower layer, larger particles were concentrated in the central region while smaller particles were distributed in the vicinity of the container wall. This layer became thicker with increasing feed outlet height and outlet diameter. The lower layer was thicker in the small container than in the large one. The opposite trend was observed in the upper layer, where smaller particles were concentrated in the central region while larger particles were distributed in the vicinity of the container wall. The above tendency was enhanced with decreasing outlet diameter.

    The increase in dynamic pressure over the static one depends on the initial stress condition on the silo wall. The relationship between the increase in the dynamic pressure and the stress condition on the wall is investigated by specifying the major principal stress direction on it. The stress condition is produced on the wall by taking the low rate feeding results in a structure with unstable static doming in the shallow portion and with stable squashed doming due to its own weight in the deep portion of the silo. Under this condition, large dynamic over pressure takes place on the foot of the critical height Hc for the yield at which the lowest dome is almost squashed. The stress condition on the wall is determined by taking the high rate feeding results in the structure with the compacted stress condition, under which Mohr's circle has switched continually to new Morh's circle with a large stress radius keeping the critical condition for yield in bulk (point B in Fig. 8). Under this condition, the overpressure ratio shows a value smaller than 1.0, and dynamic wall pressure becomes smaller than that in static conditions due to decreasing stress radius. The highest possible feeding rate is recommended with the view of decreasing the dynamic over pressure

    A highly efficient generation process for ultra fine particles (UFP) is developed by using an arc discharge method combined with a tilting tip assembly. The arc is generated between a tungsten cathode and a bulk metal anode in an argon-hydrogen gas atmosphere. The amount of the particles generated is assumed to be the decrease in bulk metal weight.
    This new process achieves a highly efficient generation rate by tilting the electrode to a particular angle, which induces the following phenomena: a concentrated anode spot caused by the thermal pinch effect of hydrogen gas, a blown arc by electromagnetic force with current electrification channel change, reaction heat caused by the thermal combination of hydrogen gas, and a plasma stream on the bulk metal surface. All of these enhance the production rate.
    The generation rate of Ni UFP at a 45° electrode angle, Ar+50%H2 and 200A current is 50g/h, is about 10 times higher than that of the conventional process.

    The behavior of particles in a gas-solid contactor with inclined baffle plates to form a zig-zag path has been experimentally studied. In this contactor, solid particles trickle down over the baffles and are spouted into the opening between the wall and the plate edge by upflowing gas. The pitch, open spacing fraction and inclination of the baffles are chosen as parameters of the experimental condition. The loading and flooding points are observed at critical gas velocities in using this apparatus. A definite increase in the solid holdup and residence time of solid particles is also observed at the loading point, and particles choked the column at the flooding point. To investigate these properties thoroughly, trajectories of a single partcle are calculated in a two-dimensional field of the gas velocity measured with a hot wire anemometer.
