Powder characteristics required for a good correlation between feeding performance of a screw feeder and powder characteristics have been investigated. As powder characteristics, the characteristics for the calculation of Carr's flowability index and representative values of diameter and compression behavior of powder layer were used. For the determination of the adequate combination of characteristics, multivariate statistics were employed.
When a screw feeder operated under the condition that feed rate is proportional to the screw rotational speed, the feeding performance can be correlated by two or three characteristics for Carr's flowability index. On the other hand, the performance under the condition that the screw rotational speed affects to the powder state in the screw requires the characteristics representing the agglomerate size and compression behavior of powder layer. This fact implies that the physical properties of agglomeration or layer are required for the correlation when the powder state is changed by the operating conditions.

A numerical simulation model for a sieving process of non-spherical particles by discrete element method (DEM) coupled with particle-based rigid body model has been developed. Four kinds of rod-like particles having aspect ratio of 4, 8, 10 and 12 were prepared as sieving non-spherical particle sample. The motion of rod-like particles in sieving process was simulated under the vertical and horizontal vibration conditions. In case of vertical vibration, sieving rate decreases with increasing aspect ratio of rod-like particles. While, in case of horizontal vibration, sieving rate strongly depends on the aspect ratio of rod-like particles and decreases with aspect ratio. Sieving behavior also depends on the amplitude and frequency of vibration. Simulation results agree with experiments.

New recycling process of FRP mortar (FRPM) pipes has been proposed and applied for recycling of waste FRPM pipes. Waste FRPM pipes were crushed by a rotary hammer type crusher. As a result, the fractures were almost separated to mortar parts and FRP parts.
The collected mortar parts are expected to be reused for FRPM pipes. On the other hand, FRP parts were chopped by a cutter mill. The chopped FRP chips were effectively separated to glass fibers and matrix resin particles by an attrition type milling. The separated glass fibers kept their own structure without significant breakage. The separated particles and fibers were coated with nanoparticle porous layer. The coated particles were then pressed to make bulk body. As a result, the bulk body showed very light weight and low thermal conductivity at room temperature. It is expected to be used as thermal insulation materials.

This study introduces a novel classification system on the basis of particle surface properties. We focused our attention on the zeta potential of silica particles dispersed by beads milling. As a result, it was found that the zeta potential of the particles was enhanced as the particle size became smaller, therefore indicating size dependency. We succeeded in developing a classification apparatus using electrophoresis. This apparatus is able to classify sub-micron sized silica particles with continuous operation and a low running cost.
In the case of a dry-cyclone, classification performance was improved by preparing an acetone solution in the dust box of the cyclone to make an acetone vapor in the cyclone. Under these conditions, the ratio of the mass of the powders collected by the upper part of the cyclone to the mass of the total feeding powder was enhanced. One of the reasons for this was the attractive force between the silica particles and the wall of the cyclone resulting from static electricity. Therefore, the cut size was controllable by changing the amount of acetone in the dust box of the dry-cyclone.
