The reinforcing effect of fibrous filler material in the bulk powdery matrix has been investigated on the basis of energy consumption for pulling fiber out from the matrix.
A separable cell type of powder adhesion tester was applied to measure the characteristic curves of tensile force versus displacement. Assuming the one-dimensional arrangement of fiber on the cross-sectional fracture surface of the compressed mixture pad, the residence energy for the chopped single fiber pulling out from the matrix was calculated. And a new testing method to confirm the interaction forces between the fibrous material and the powder bed has been proposed. The new testing equipment consists of uni-axial compression powder cell with through holes for single fiber and linear sliding head with load and displacement sensors.
It has been shown that the energy level of the pull out resistance for the chopped fiber from the compacted powder bed can be estimated by the energy based on the pull out test for the single fiber.
