JOURNAL FREE ACCESSMuroto deep seawater is rich in nutrients, clean, and low in temperature. Deep seawater is used as a raw material in industry. A periodic observation of deep seawater was executed and the stabilities of each element were studied. As a result, almost all major elements were found to be stable at the coefficient of a variance of 2% or less. On the other hand, those of the nutrients were high compared to major elements. And the correlation for each nutrient was found. This infers that Muroto deep seawater is deeper than actual deep seawater compared by means of vertical profiles of nutrients in the North Pacific.View full abstractDownload PDF (5362K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSUranium adsorption tests using bundle-shaped fiber adsorbents containing amidoxime groups have been performed on a bench scale model of the adsorbent bed tank.On the basis of these adsorption tests, a conceptual design for extracting uranium from seawater is presented in this study. The extraction system consists of a barge with adsorbent bed tanks and a pusher boat. In the proposed system, seawater flows into the adsorbent bed tanks from suction valves placed on the inner bottom of the barge, then passes through the piled adsorbent and is finally discharged out of the tanks through the overflow gates by drain pumps.
In addition, numerical simulations for the extraction system are carried out under theoretical operating conditions. A feasible assessment of the extraction system is also made in this paper. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe vertical profiles of dissolved selenium species, selenite (+4), selenate (+6), and organic selenide (-2), at five stations in the Indian Ocean were determined with a high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)-2, 3-diaminonaphtalene (DAN) fluorometric method. The concentrations of selenite in the upper 300m were very low, and the profiles were similar to nutrient behavior (surface depletion-deep water enrichment). A significant correlation between selenite and nutrients in these water columns and stoichiometric models are established for the Indian Ocean. These relationships indicate that the biogeochemical cycle for selenite in the Indian Ocean is similar to that in other ocean regions. Selenate is the dominant species in the surface water and its concentration is almost uniform from the surface to the bottom. However, the mean concentrations of selenate were different at each station. Organic selenide was first identified in open-ocean deep water, and the profiles indicated that some types of organic selenide exist in oceans.View full abstractDownload PDF (5435K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe anaerobic oxidation of dissolved H2S into elemental sulfur was studied at 23°C and pH 6.5±0.3 in a continuous culture of the phototrophic green sulfur bacterium Cblorobium limicola using different light sources. The maximum H2S oxidation rate measured using a near infrared LED (light-emitting diode with a peak emission at 735±25 nm) at 10 lx was comparable to that using the white fluorescent lamps (wave length range of 300-800 nm) at 5000 lx. This suggests that both light sources achieve nearly identical light energies in the long wavelength region of 735±25 nm. Moreover, the combined use of the infrared LED and the white fluorescent lamps provided a 30% increase in the maximum oxidation rate per unit reactor volume.View full abstractDownload PDF (2793K)
