    A game engine is a generic term for a software having two roles: to design the logic of virtual reality scenes, and to render photorealistic images. To leverage this capability in architectural fields, interoperability with 3D CAD is crucial. Intermediate file-based data coordination requires fulfilling problematic tasks associated with the cyclic process involving design and visualization.
    Herein, the authors propose an interconnection system that employs relational database for syncing 3D models on 3D CAD and virtual reality scenes on game engine. Demonstrations of interactive implementation of operations in both 3D CAD and the virtual reality scene validates the application possibilities.

    Five-axis machines are capable of complicated movement; however, their operation requires both experience and knowledge. For applying these machines to diversified small-quantity production, a sophisticated operating system that assists the operation in deriving the toolpath and avoiding errors is indispensable. From this perspective, the authors attempted to develop an automatic toolpath deriving method that detects processable polygons with a circular saw by analyzing a target geometry. A movement simulation method was also developed to ensure safety in operation. This paper reports the implementation of the system, and its validation through building a catenary dome that has miter joints.

    In real space, 3D space seen on the display (DP space), and space seen on the immersive head head-mounted display (HMD space), the impressions of space and perceptions of distance are different. In this study, the t-test was carried out based on data obtained from experiments to clarify the difference of DP space and HMD space from real space. The results show that there is a significant difference between the DP space and the HMD space, and it became clear that the DP space gives a perception close to the real space.

    This paper reports a reconnaissance result of structural damage to school gymnasiums caused by the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. A total of 328 gymnasiums built in Kumamoto and Oita prefectures has been investigated. 55% of investigated gymnasiums were slightly damaged or not damaged while 17% of investigated gymnasiums were seriously damaged. In most of the seriously damaged gymnasiums, fracture of vertical braces as well as edge failure of concrete at column bases or steel roof joints were observed. Especially, edge failure of concrete at steel roof joints were dominant regardless of the construction year and whether seismic retrofit has been done.

    An earthquake occurred in Pohang City, on Nov. 15, 2017. The Pohang earthquake was the first major disaster in South Korea, resulting in a devastating earthquake. Therefore, the situation of disaster response systems and evacuation was analyzed mainly by the three perspectives on disaster response systems, organizations and operations.
    Analyzing the response system for dealing with earthquakes and the establishment of evacuation shelters in Korea reveals that: ①in terms of institutional characteristics, this earthquake resulted in the recognition of the need for systematic earthquake disaster prevention policies and initiated the creation of institutional frameworks. ②in terms of disaster response characteristics, the administration prioritized and responded to the needs of the refugees in this earthquake. ③in terms of local community response characteristics, a system of self-help, assistance and public assistance, which utilizes the resources of local communities and supports the autonomy of the community was observed.

    Tall trees with their heights of more than ten meters are transplanted quite often as landscaping planting in Japan recently. These transplanted tall trees tend to fall down because of the moments induced by strong wind forces. The objective of this study is to clarify the resistance to wind damage of transplanted tall trees. Three kinds of trees and thirty two specimens were used for pull-down loading tests in the field. We obtained important results and information such as the effects of various factors on a maximum pull-down moment, the improvement effects of a support system for a tree on the resistance to wind damage, the wind velocity when a tree falls down, and a tilt angle of a tree and restoration characteristics to its original state after suffering wind pressure.
