    It is known that the ability of the object handling contains a lot of information, and the balance of grasp force of each finger is important to show the dexterity of finger's movement. These findings are expected to be positioned as a method of gathering useful information for healthcare monitoring and confirmation of rehabilitation progress like orthopedic diseases, or early detection research of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and cerebral infarction diseases. In this study, we have developed a device and a measurement system that can evaluate the force balance of multiple fingers during a daily hand grasp motion on an object like a beverage bottle. This measurement system can make a quantitative evaluation on a hand motion with indicating the changes of the hand natural grasp posture and force balance which could be caused by any illness indicative changes of hand function. By using the developed measurement system, it was found that by the condition of changing the grasp posture from natural to unnatural, the collapse of the best finger force balance could be measured and verified relating to the grasp posture.

    Particulate matter (PM) exhausted from diesel engines is categorized into carbon soot, hydrophilic PM, and hydrophobic PM. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic PM are composed of condensing moisture or oil content on soot, respectively. PM measurement methods commonly used today cannot have selectivity between these PM properties because these methods collect PM on a filter by forced inertial impact. Therefore, we proposed collecting PM on quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) under natural adsorption. In this study, we coated surfaces of QCMs with hydrophilic or hydrophobic materials and investigated their selectivity between volatile organic gases and moisture that had hydrophilic or hydrophobic groups.

    In the result, a polystyrene-coated QCM showed selectivity for toluene gas. It was possible that this selectivity was affected by π-π interaction of benzene circles between polystyrene and toluene. Similarly, a polyvinyl alcohol-coated QCM showed selectivity for moisture by the contribution of reciprocal hydroxy groups. Moreover, a cellulose acetate-coated QCM responded to ethanol gas significantly, although it was unstable. Any coating materials did not contribute to increasing response to iso-octane gas that had methyl groups. The use of gas was adequate to consider natural adsorption and selectivity. In the next study, we perform experiments using hydrophilic and hydrophobic PM.

    Transpiration of living plants causes the cavitation in the xylem and the acoustic emissions (AE) emitted during transpiration can be measured to monitor the activity of the plants. In this study, electret sensors (ECS) and IoT devices were prepared at low cost and the long-term plant AE measurements in outdoor environments of strawberry greenhouses and tea plantation were carried out. In greenhouse-grown strawberries, AE determination was performed considering as noise if AEs were detected more than once per second. Most AEs occurred during the daytime, and AEs caused by transpiration-induced cavitation could be measured. Furthermore, the correlation between the center of gravity (WH) of the AE occurrence hour of day and fruit quality was examined, and it was found that the later the WH, the higher the sugar content of the fruit. On the other hand, a large number of AE were detected due to rainfall when the AE determination was conducted on tea trees in the open field. Such an AE occurrence due to rainfall was eliminated by neglecting AE occurrence when soil moisture increased. Then, the 7-day moving average of the daily AE generation showed a strong correlation with soil temperature. These results indicate the possibility to monitor AE in outdoor environments such as greenhouse cultivation and open field cultivation using ECS and IoT devices.
