    A tetraploid plant of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora SIEB. et ZUCC.), which was induced by the seed treatment method with 0.3% colchicine solution in 1950.
    Pollens of the tetraploid plant were compared with those of the diploid plants.
    Pollen grains of the tetraploid plant were larger than those of diploid plants in size.
    37.3% of the pollen of the tetraploid plant had from 3 to 5 air-sacs, as shown in Table 2, whereas in the diploid plants such ones were not hardly observed.
    The pollen with 4 or 5 air-sacs had 1 or 2 nuclei and perfect or imperfect partition wall was formed in the centre of the pollen grain. These pollens seemed to be induced by irregularity on meiosis. However, from the facts that the pollen with 3 air-sacs appeared as many as 35.3% and was normal on the appearance, it may be supposed that the number of air-sac was related to increment of cytoplasm.
    The pollen fertility of the tetraploid plant was lower than that of the diploid plants. Some irregularities as to the behavior of chromosomes, which were frequently observed at first or second meiotic anaphase and telophase, are supposed as among the causes of the lower fertility.

    1) This work was carried to find a convenient heat application which would completely kill the contaminating pollen of Japanese black pine (Pinus Thunbergii) and Japanese red pine (P. densiflora) in pollination equipment.
    2) Exposure to 50 degrees C. for 4 hours was completely lethal for red pine pollen.
    3) On this application, pollen of black pine is more resitant to heat than that of red pine. It germinated 12 percent after exposed to 60 degrees C. for 24 hours, but the temperature of 70 degrees C. was completely lethal after 1 hour or more exposure.

    Sugi seedlings died in groups locally in several villages. The result of the damage investigation and microclimate observation showed that the death of Sugi seedlings was caused by frost injury.

    This investigation is concerned with a new method for tension test perpendicular to grain of wood. According to test method by the author, the test piece has the shape and the dimension of the kind shown in Fig. 1, and the tensile load was loaded in the Amsler testing machine (at 400kg capacity) in hardwoods, and in single lever type tensile test machine (at 100kg capacity) in softwoods. In the cases, the method of clamp for test piece is ‘wedge grip’ in Fig. 2. The elongation of test piece was determined by the Yuasa's mirror extensometer (10-3mm unit, the 1st method). The gage length of test piece is 20mm or 30mm at the center part (epual dimension) in Fig. 2.
    If a prismatical test piece (Fig. 1) of wood be loaded in a testing machine in tension, and if we plot the increase in length Δl of a length lo chosen in the unstrained condition as abscissae (ε=Δl/lo) and the tensile stress (σ kgcm2) as ordinates we obtain curves of kind shown in Fig. 3. In the type A the ‘VVolligkeitsgrad’ is about 0.5-0.6 (softwoods); and in the type B it is about 0.6-0.7 (hardwoods).
    The results obtained by the author's test is shown in table 1. And then, the test pieces fracture at the center part of equal dimension in Fig. 4, and in the case the surface of fracture is radial face contained wood rayes divided. Finally, the tensile strength obtained by this method seems to be higher as the results in the F. P. L. of U. S. of America, Germany and the others (see table 2 and 3).

    1) Transverse sections for microscopic study were prepared from two kinds of bamboo-shoot (Phyllostachys edulis and nigra var. Henonis) and phloroglucinol-HCI and Mäule reactions were tested. Both reactions were already positive around the spiral vessel at the apex of bambooshoot, then the reaction sphere was extended arround the vessel in vascular bundle along with older portion. But, parenchymatous tissue other than vascular bundle was negative, until the bamboo-shoot grew up about 5m. in hight.
    2) Employing the section prepared above mentioned method, β-glucosidase and phenoloxidase reactions were tested by using p-nitrophenol-β-d-glucoside, p-phenilendiamine, hydroquinone and catechol as substrates, and these reactions were always positive around the same portion as lignin reaction appeared.
    3) Some experiments were carried out for both β-glucosidase and phenoloxidase and following facts were cleared:
    a)β-glucosidase is alike to emulsin.
    b) phenoloxidase has a laccase nature.
    4) The activity of these β-glucosidase and phenoloxidase was intense at the basal portion of bamboo-shoot and these facts suggested the relationship between lignif ication and these enzymes.
    5) The determination of lignin and methoxyl content of lignin was made for the sample of each higher, middle and lower portion of bamboo-shoot. The methoxyl content was lower along with higher (younger) portion.
    6) Based on the above mentioned facts, discussion for FREUbENBERG's lignin formation theory was made.
