With use of the Anthropometric measurements taken from Atayal, Saisiyat, Bunun and Paiwan tribes residing along the central mountain range in Taiwan, cluster analysis (group averaging method) and analysis of main coordinates were made and geographical variations among Taiwan aborigines were investigated by comparing head and face growth. The results were as follows : 1. Group difference and differentiation of the mountain brethren 1) Cluster analysis showed formation of two main clusters on the south and north of the central mountain rage in Taiwan of Atayal and Saisiyat tribe group and Paiwan and Rukai tribe group, each with mutually incompatible features. At the geographical midpoint between the two clusters was a subcluster of Bunun tribe with morphology which can be included in either. These tendencies did not change with aging. 2) Geographical cline extending north and south along the central mountain range was thought to exist. Formation of this geographical cline was attributed to the effect of the Mongoloid of China and Northeast Asianlineage on Deutero Malayide group. 2. Comparison between adult and 15-year-old group 1) Comparison of the results from the cluster analysis of the adult and 15-year-old groups showed a similar tendency, and formation of two main clusters of Saisiyat and Bunun tribe group and Rukai and Paiwan tribe group was seen. Atayal tribe formed a subcluster with Saisiyat and Bunun tribe group. This tendency became more evident when developed two dimensionally by the analysis of major coordinates. 2) Inclusion of measurements obtained at the growth stage in the examination was considered to result in more accurate determination than making judgment by values for adults.

An investigation was made on interleukin-1 (IL-1) -like activity in the exudates from infected root canals of patients with apical periodontitis. The results were as follows : 1. IL-1-like activity was seen in 8 cases among 22 cases with periapical lesions. Six of these 8 cases were in the acute inflammation phase. 2. IL-1-like activity in periapical exudates from patients with apical periodontitis measured about 1/10 that in gingival crevicular fluid from patients with marginal periodontitis. 3. On gel filtration chromatography, the molecular weight of IL-1-like factors in periapical exudates was about 10, 000 daltons. 4. In the experiment of neutralization using anti-IL-1 α antiserum, IL-1-like activity in periapical exudates was inhibited by about 20-30%. IL-1-like activity in gingival fluids, however, was completely blocked. In the same experiment using anti-IL-1 β antiserum, IL-1-like activity in periapical exudates was suppressed by about 50%. Therefore IL-1 β antiserum was more successful than IL-1 α antiserum in suppressing IL-1-like activity in periapical exudates. 5. IL-1-like activity was diminished following successful endodontic treatments. However, when endodontic treatments did not produce good results in the patient, IL-1-like activity continued to be present in periapical exudates. The above findings suggest that an IL-1-like factor exists in periapical exudates and it may relate to the degree or the condition of the periapical lesions.

Speech disorders confirmed in a number of neurological diseases are commonly dysarthria. The author took especial note of the velopharyngeal closure function in dysarthria of these diseases, and made a study of velopharyngeal closure function in patients with neurological diseases using the intelligibility rating examination, aerodynamic examination and nasopharyngeal fiberscopic examination. The subjects were 23 patients of neurological diseases and 15 controls with normal speech. Cases of the neurological diseases investigated in this study were 7 spinocerebellar degeneration, 5 myastenia gravis, 3 Parkinson's disease, 2 amyotrophic lataral sclerosis, and each 1 of myotonic dystrophy, motor neurone disease, pseudobulbar paralysis, oculopharyngeal dystrophy, mitochondrial myopathy, and brain tumor. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The score of the intelligibility rating examination of the neurological disease group (DG) was lower than that of normal group (NG) (p<0.05). 2. The score of the intelligibility rating examination on vowel, Ha-sounds, voiced and voiceless suonds and Ra-sounds of DG was lower than that of NG (p<0.01). That of nasal sounds was the same (p<0.05). On semivowel sounds, however, there was no difference between DG and NG. 3. In the aerodynamic examination, leakage of the air from nose was observed in 12 out of 15 cases when patient blew and pronounced monosyllable sounds. 4. In the aerodynamic examination, air volume of leakage from nose of DG was greater than that of NG and pressure of expiration from the mouth of DG were lower than NG. 5. The nasopharyngeal fiberscopic examination revealed that all 23 cases had some disorder of velopharyngeal closure function. 6. Eighteen out of 23 cases of DG corresponded to Yamaoka's classification. In these cases, 4 were type I c, 1 type II, 5 type III and 8 type IV. Other 5 cases did not correspond to this classification. 7. There was a considerable variety in the state and degree of closure even within each type of this classification. 8. A tremor in the velopharyngeal area at rest in 2 patients was found by the nasopharyngeal fiberscopic examination. The velopharyngeal area at rest in 2 patients was shaped something like a kidney bean. In other 2 patients, when this area moved to close, the paralyzed side of this area was covered by the other side.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of fixing treatment on an alginate impression material. The impressions of two original models, a metal block and an acrylic resin block, were taken with an alginate imression material. These impressions were dipped into the fixing solution (1%, 3%, 5% K_2SO_4) and two types of gypsum products, plaster and dental stone were poured into them. The surface of the dies were examined for reproduction of detail, roughness, hardness and aspects of dihydrate crystals. The results were as follows : (1) The surface of plaster with fixing treatment was rougher than without it, while no changes were found for the dental stone die. (2) The surface reproduction was slightly improved by fixing treatment. (3) The surface hardness was hardly changed by fixing treatment. (4) No changes were observed in shape and size of the dihydrate crystals by fixing treatment.

We have developed a method for measuring the amount of retrogradely transported HRP in the rat masseteric motor neuron using a modification of Mesulam's HRP histochemical protocol and an image processing system combined with a light microscope and a TV camera. Some factors affecting the reproducibility of the production and measurement of a colored reaction product after the HRP histochemical procedure were examined with the spectrophotometry in vitro and the image processing system for the tissue section. The results obtained were as follows : 1) In the TMB procedure for HRP activity, the difference in freshness of the solution A containing sodium pentacyanonitrosylferrate and carrageenan resulted in a conspicuous change of the amount of HRP reaction product. 2) When fine dark blue reaction products scattered in a 60 μm-thick section were measured with the light microscope of the image processing system, the difference in focusing affected little the measured values. 3) A little changing voltage of a light source of the microscope brought much difference in the measured values.

A case of Epulis fibrosa osteoplastica in the 〓 region of a 86-year-old man is reported with a histopathological consideration. It is interesting that as long as over 20 years elapsed between finding and removal of the mass. A mass consisted of the covering epithelium, abundant old fibrous tissues, fat tissue and bone tissue. Epithelium having long epithelial pegs and fibrous tissue occupying the greater part of the mass were remarkable. It is suggested that the bone tissue resulted from fibrous tissues falling into the metaplasia, and that the fat tissue resulted from fibrous tissues falling into the fat degeneration.

An odontoma is characterized by malformation of tooth germ. This is not a true tumor. We experienced a compound odontoma at the site corresponding to the apical region of the maxillary right deciduous incisor in a 10-year-old boy. 1) Radiographic examination revealed that the hard tissue mass had a tooth-like radiopacity and was located on the impacted right upper central incisor. 2) The maxillary right deciduous anterior incisor and impacted right upper central incisor were extracted and then the odontoma was enucleated. 3) The diagnosis of compound odontoma was made histopathologically. 4) A review of the Japanese literature reported from 1977 to 1988 was made and discussed clinically.

Plasmacytosis, a benign inflammatory disease rarely found in the oral cavity, is microscopically characterized with intensive subepithelial plasmacyte infiltrate. We have recently experienced a case of plasmacytosis in the lower lip of a 68-year-old woman and reported on it with some comments. As clinical findings, the lower lip was slightly reddish with crossed white lines forming a lace pattern. Histopathological examination showed severe submucosal infiltrate of polyclonal (posotive for both λ and κ chain) plasmacytes and it was diagnosed as plasmacytosis. A steroid ointment was topically applied to the lower lip. About 4 weeks after the treatment the lesions comlpetely disappeared. The prognosis is fairly good and there is no recurrence after one year and ten months.
